What I don't get is why it is stringed with four strings (specs says four string bridge) while the headstock has eight tuners.

Easy, its for an extra set. Broke a string, no prob, already a replacement is installed.

The extra strings are like high horsepower in a car - you don't usually use it, but it's nice to know it's there if you need it.
