The Selecter - "On my Radio"

I guess it was one of the true Ska classics, a feel good skanking record that will be an evergreen for always. But when The Selecter reformed in the early nineties and re-recorded their classic, it failed to become as big as it was.

The Selecter - "On my Radio" 1991 version.

I wonder why this flopped, it sounds just as good as the original and is played just a little tighter.

It's the Steinberger's fault. Vids with Steinbergers in'em never become hits, it's a rule of nature. Thankfully so.

Actually, I like the remake better. That female vocal really gives it something.

The first musical Ska contact I had was - strangely enough - this:

We've taken too much for granted ... and all the time it had grown ...
From techno seeds we first planted ... evolved a mind of its own ...

What 's the point in re-recording and changing nothing essentially?
No wonder it flopped big time. They were competing their own hit.

Plus the original has a youthful energy that the new version lacks. Listen  to the bass part. The new one is simplified a bit and lost it's charm.

About Bepop Deluxe: wow is that Prog Ska?  ;D
Wonder if The Police were big fans...

I saw this Ska band, the Oreskaband on the Warped Tour here in Chicago. They were really tight, the bass player was great, as was band.

Oh really?  ;)

UB40 "If it happens again"
Was a hit record.

Genesis "Tonight, tonight, tonight"
Was a hit.

Tears for fears "Head over heels"
Was a hit. (Listen to that bassline!)

So that rule doesn't always apply.
