I loved the irony of Bill Wyman's unloved Mustang outstripping Ritters, Alembics et al to being the most expensive bass. I just can't get excited about an ugly '80s Yamaha that Sir Paul of McCartney played for ten minutes or so.

That is actually a very well made and good sounding bass. My favorite of the BB series has always been the BB1100S - very underrated but still, imho, one of the best production basses.

Whether Paul McCartney played one or not, I tend to like the way Yamaha basses sound.  I mostly have to limit myself to light basses because of neck issues.  But some Yamahas are not so heavy as you might think.

The reissues are long scale, how does it balance on a strap? Any neck dive?

They’re well balanced . I’ve become more of a short scale guy , but mine’s a 34 . I’m ok with that , the originals in the mid 60’s were 32 .
I’d always thought the shape was wonderful , and would occasionally go looking at them on the internet . There were always a couple for sale , but would involve shipping from Japan , Australia or Europe , so when one popped up for sale in Toronto for a reasonable price I jumped .
I’d like to be using it more . I’ve just got too much stuff .

Yamahas are fine, my Billy Sheehan Signature is a well thought out bass that sounds great and varied (though I still haven't worked out what those stereo controls REALLY do ...  ). I'm not too crazy about the visuals (except for the Samurai), too conventional/Fendery for me.

Together with his WAL, that is probably the best bass Macca ever played. Höfners and Rics are of course cult, but we all know about their drawbacks and idiosyncrasies.
