I got as far as the two minute mark and the guy was still flapping his jaws instead of playing.

Once they actually played, it was nice. I don't know the origin of the original tune, but I know it as, "Sweet Hour of Prayer". It's not often I come to the Outpost and hear a tune I could have sung last Sunday!

I saw a picture of a Norwegian beach picnic, circa 1920 and there was a guy playing one of these.   From that black and white pic, I couldn't figure what the hell that thing was he was playin - now an answer.   I dig this, thanks for posting.

Now, he's got all those strings and still needs someone else to play that simple melody...

I went back and watched another minute, and you're right. he's just using it as a big rhythm guitar. Why even bother?

There's some beautiful harp guitar music out there. For example, check out the sample on this page on luthier Mike Doolin's site.

That's why it seemed silly to me, using the harp as just open strings for what you play. They're had to be people who would do more and go to the harp side.

All he's doing is using the harp strings for the root note bass. Something you should be able to do with a good acoustic guitar and the right chording technique as well though granted you hear the different scale of the harp bass notes, their clarity and longer sustain. Melody is still nice though.

The biggest drawback I see is that by having the picking hand jump between the harp and guitar, both chording and harp technique suffer and you're left with pretty simplistic stuff.
