The consoling thing about the Nam war is how in the last twenty years your relations with that country have grown in leaps and bounds. The Vietnamese certainly had a grudge to bear given how much Napalm and Agent Orange you dropped on their country and on the other hand there is no other country in the world where as many GIs left their lives. Given how you have never gotten over a few missiles stationed for something like a week in Cuba (only after you had done the same thing close to the Soviet border in Turkey!) and a crashed helicopter near Teheran, your new-found relations with Vietnam are amazing. In that really ugly conflict, both sides were somehow willing to forgive if not forget. Maybe it was easier for the Vietnamese because they enforced their agenda in the end against the then (and now) mightiest nation in the world. Something no one had done before or after them. (Not only) For Asians that must have instilled pride no end and generated a lasting feeling that all sacrifices were worth it.
