When I first hear HR's version I knew it was a cover. I just thought it was an odd song choice for a glam band to cover. Later I found out Johnny Thunders covered it and I assumed Hanoi took the inspiration from him. I'm also pretty sure that Hanoi Rocks was taken from the Thunders & the Heartbreakers song "Chinese Rocks".

This has been a fun thread, seeing the lifespan of a cool little song. It illustrates nicely how any particular piece of music can take on a life of its own.

And much to the credit of the writers, it's still something people love to hear today.  Pipeline and Wipe Out may be the most widely recognized instrumental surf tunes ever recorded.  (Setting aside vocals such as the aforementioned Beach Boys).
