That looks to be a step in the right direction. Fender have been cobbling together stuff like this for a while. Take pickups from one guitar, mount them in another, fob it off as a 'Special Player Stratmaster' or something like that.

I can see a JP jr with Firebird pickups actually selling, which is a lot more than quite a few of Gibson's recent offerings.
