Rickenbacker Basses / Re: 4001 neck width at the nut

My son's July '86 4003S/BT has a very thick neck, but I find it very comfortable, and it's the fattest sounding (in a best way possible) of the three Rics we have at home.

How wide is it? I do not like wide necks. but have no problem with thick necks.

QuoteA friend who's an accomplished violin maker and classical upright player has told me that in his experience, the thicker the neck, the meatier the tone.

I do not know what he means with meatier, but in my experience neck dimensions do not say much about the way wood sounds and responds. (My shadow has the thinest and smallest neck and is acoustically the best sounds Rick I've ever owned.)

All the '86's i've tried (and have) have narrow necks. But if memory serves me right our moderator's sons has an '86 with less comfortable neck.
70ies and 60ies Rick's can have narrow neck's as well. In general somewhere around 1994 necks tended to grow wider.

Nice!

Do you have a black rug to show display your blue basses on?

No, I don't. But they look good against a white wall also. ;-)

Owning both a Shadow and a Blackstar I somehow feel I should own one of these too. But not at current price and probably not at current neck-width. ;-)

Thanx all! :-)

What is the 4th bass from the left?  Was that a particular model of 4003?

4th from left is a Shadow. Rickenbacker made 50 or 60 of these in '86 for a celebration of a US music shop. It is my best sounding and best playing Rick. And that is what I read from most Shadow owners.

On my monitor it does have something blue'ish. But the colour totally not resembles the 2 AZG's I have here.

The 4003S could go for a standard. But this one is an '86. It was unavailable for some time. ;-)

I'm still peeved that Chris P. sold his without telling me.  :)

I'm not. He sold it to me. ;-)

Is it me, or does the neckwidth really look reasonably (small).

Very nice. :-)

I wonder if it got some inspiration from this one:

(picture is a little too blueish.)

Well... AFAIK 1986 4003 Shadows have the thinnest/narrowest neck profile. They are 1 1/2" wide at the nut - like a Jazz bass (A-width in Fender nomenclature), and also very thin front-to-back. My Shadow's pencil neck is thinner than my '77 Fender Jazz.

My '86 4003 MID/BT has the same profile as my ('86) Shadow. My '86 4003s is also more jazzy than beefy.

900 euros. Tempting.... ;-) But I allready have a very nice Thunderbird and I do not need another one as I prefer my Rickenbacker's. ;-)

Rickenbacker Basses / Re: bass cap?

It is a capacitor which cuts the bass of the treble pickup. Ages ago this was ment to be used as a solo kind of sound. A lot of people dislike the capacitor. I like it a lot when both pickups are engaged.
