Fender Basses / Re: Fender '66 slab P-basses
« on: November 19, 2008, 01:19:00 PM »
Entwistle seemed to think there was some mojo with the electronics in the slab basses. His Fiesta "Frankenstein" had the guts of a slab bass. Apparently he had the opportunity to compare a number of slab basses against some standard P basses from the same era.

Gibson Basses / Re: Newer Bird Pickup
« on: November 18, 2008, 04:17:51 PM »
what exactly are those pickups? TB plus for Les Paul bass maybe? Or fake?

Those are the Les Paul type TB+ pups. I have a pair on my Fenderbird.

I agree with Uwe that these are some of the best sounding pups you can get, passive or otherwise. Those and the current Ric high gains. Tone, dynamics, and power!

.... they will probably end up gettin that bloody Pino Paladino ....AGAIN !!! .... JEEZ ,  :bored:..... ???...........  P- L -E- A -S- E !     ...can he try to keep his nose outa somethin, ...FOR ONCE !     :-\
dexter

LOL! I was thinking the same thing before I even got to this paragraph. I just caught some the the VH1 Rock Honors thing for the Who last night before bed. Pino is GREAT, but it's hard to watch ANYBODY try to fill the Ox's shoes. It's a shame that they even cal the band the Who without Moon AND Entwistle. Again, Pino is great, he could easily play circles around Fraser or Wyman, but he's such a "hired gun" kind of guy. I would rather see more of a stylist with a band like Faces.

As for inhaling.............Adhesives or otherwise   ;D

I waited until I finished drilling the TWELVE tiny holes....... So many screws for something that does nothing but look good. Hmm, there's a double entendre in there somewhere.  ;D Really, what were those things for - to cover up sloppy routes?

Thanks to all! And I knew Uwe would not be particularly moved, but didn't he just take possession of something with even more shiny parts than this one?

looks nice!  can you post a body shot, please?

I still haven't figured out how to properly photograph guitars, but I will try to get a good body shot for ya. Here's a crop of the pic above.

Gibson Basses / A little extra *bling* for my LP
« on: November 11, 2008, 09:01:58 AM »
OK, I'm a simple guy, and I like shiny things.... So, changing the black hardware to chrome on my '94 LP Special held me over for a while, but it just wasn't enough. I had Dave at Fretsonthenet.net make me some polished aluminum trim rings for the pups. They're basically 70's style T-bird rings with a slightly enlarged opening for the black plastic soapbars. Then, I added some chrome top SG/T-bird style knobs. I like it! Has kind of a Hobbit vibe now. The bass looks kind of brown in the pic for some reason. It's actually very red....

The Bass Zone / Re: Jack Bruce Blasts Zep!
« on: November 11, 2008, 08:44:35 AM »
Mike will always be everybody's favorite Van Halen singer! I just listened to an audio interview with him yesterday and he cracked me up when he said something about the last VH tour - "I heard I WAS kind of on the tour!" referring to the fact that they sampled his background vocals for the shows. He always seemed like a cool guy. We won't talk about his live bass solos....

PS - I love that Wolfmother record, regardless of how derivative it is of old Uriah Heep, Zep, Sab, etc. They did it well!

I almost started a thread about this, but I knew it would end up being extremely negative toward Mr. Bruce, and I'm still not quite certain just how serious he was being. But there were definitely some unnecessary things said, whether he was joking or not. And the whole "I was just kidding, BUT... blah blah blah blah blah.." is just weak. Just from a compositional standpoint, Zep destroys Cream. He says the only good guy in the band is dead? Regardless of what you think of Page and Plant, there's no denying the mammoth amount of talent possessed by JPJ. Phenomenally tasteful bass player AND a master keyboardist. Then there's guitar and mandolin, and his crazy lap steel stuff. Mr. Bruce should shut up (unless he's singing) and play the bass. But PLEASE not the fretless - MY EARS!!!  :P  See, there I go! I will stop now.  ;D

Gibson Basses / Re: Nonreverse Thunderbird Pickguards on the way
« on: November 06, 2008, 01:10:27 PM »
Well I didn't make the cut for the first 50 Bachbirds, so I'll be holding off on my pickguard order. They look great though!

I may contact them and try to get a "bare bones" model. I've got late model pickups, NOS chrome covers and rings, and a truss rod cover ready for a home.

I don't know, but his Alembic got smashed a few years ago when a stage collapsed.

Flip flops on stage = BAD!

I could not BELIEVE it when I found out he was the guy from Rubincon. I remember seeing them on a broadcast of the California Jam II or something like that. He was RIPPIN it up slap style.

A bass made of Gibson parts to emulate a Hamer? The mind boggles; certainly an interesting concept. I'll play it tonight for the first time at a rehearsal.

Let's complete that thought...

A bass made of Gibson parts to emulate a Hamer emulating a Gibson!  ;D
