Gibson Basses / Re: U2
« on: March 06, 2009, 10:27:29 AM »
U2's success mystefies me the same way R.E.M.'s did a generation ago. ???

Interesting statement considering both bands came out in the late 70s/early 80s.  ???

FWIW - I never liked REM either. U2 on the other hand floored me when I first heard Boy. Interesting times... I was into bands like UK and Brand X at the same time as U2 and the Police!

Gibson Basses / Re: What type of bass is this, anybody got a clue?

This a short post, cos I'm eating boerenkool with worst at the moment.

I have this book about Billy Bo's guitars and cars. Most guitars have a matching bass and most of them are custom made. I look this one up. This book is a must have though.

My favorite: In the eighties when the headless hype was going on Fender made a headless Strat and a headless P for a ZZ Top video. Those instruments had no tuners at al!!!:D

You can see in one of their bad 80s videos that the strings are held on at the nut by capos!

Thanks for confirming that. BTW - the modified Warmoth body John gave me is 1 3/4'' thick.

1 3/4" same as Fender and the same as Johns FB, no neck dive issue that's for sure. Us Gibby players are used to skinny bodies !

I thought Fenders were 1 5/8'' for some reason? Anyway, yeah, no neck dive at all! My F-Bird (body courtesy of John) is like a PLANK with a Fender neck screwed on. Cool bass, not my most comfortable. I mostly play a Ric or sometimes a LP Special.

Of all the TB-Plus variations available, these are the most aggressive sounding. I have them on my 8 string LP Standard, they do their work fine, bit brutish, but what do you expect from an 8 string.

What is this 8 string LP Standard you speak of????  :o

You know I didn't know the name Peter Cook (except in terms of Derek and Clive) before this thread, but look what's on ebay now

WOW! That's cool. Put some legs on it and you could serve Thankgiving dinner on that thing.

Hmm, pretty sexy. Definitely more of a "Gripper" than Grabber. No maple 'board? I do have a thing for black and chrome.  ;D
