Gibson Basses / Re: New Les Paul standard bass on the way.,

The street price on the Special was $650 around 93-94. List was $1000. Same price as the LP Studio guitar at the time. Most expensive Standard I ever saw was at Knut-Koupee in Minneapolis for about $1600, which was about 1/3 off list. It wasn't one of the super-duper AAAA tops, no doubt those ran a bit more. I never saw a flat-top Deluxe in a store, they were priced in between.

I never saw more than one at a time in any store so I never had the chance to compare necks on the Standard and Special.

No, they were complaining mostly about Leno's ratings costing them ad dollars in prime time and giving them a poor lead-in to the news, causing lower newscast ratings. It's can't just be about the quality of local news if it's only happening to NBC affiliates.

not to mention the fact that they were always a GAZILLION dollars just because of the Gibson name,
or Overlooked completely cause of the epiphone name.....

I don't think so. Take a 60s Gibson and convert the price to 90s dollars and you'll find the 90s Gibson basses were noticeably less expensive. This is also true of most major brands.

Gibson just didn't promote basses. Very few stores stocked them. Ergo, poor sales.

Epis weren't overlooked, on the whole Epi basses sold very well. The LP models didn't, but that's just the market, which is mostly younger players on limited budgets. Seems obvious that a lot of them didn't want a bass that looks like a LP guitar.

A lighthearted crack about scoring some matching diamond encrusted knee high socks probably wouldn't fly well either then...   ;D

Not to mention the diamond encrusted hot pants.

Might be that male affliction... "selective" hearing...  ;)

I may have heard it and not known, but otherwise I just wouldn't know unless somebody pointed it out to me. Lynyrd Skynyrd is not the kind of music I listen to, no offense to anyone who likes them. I won't make a conscious choice to listen to them.

De gustibus non est disputandum.

This Latin adage came from the Roman scholar Liberacicus.

To my eyes, Ritters are ugly as sin.

I'm not watching the clip. Never heard Freebird to my knowledge and I'm not going to start now, and I can't take more than a few seconds of Will Ferrell. But Conan can really play guitar.

Leno's prime time audience was just as big as his Tonight Show audience, averaging a little over 5 million viewers. Unfortunately that's about one-third as much as it takes to be number one in prime time. The affiliate stations were losing ad money and news ratings and were threatening revolt.

Conan's late night audience was only about 2.5 million, he was getting clobbered by Letterman consistently. To be fair, he had only been on a few months.  No telling what might have happened down the road, NBC really didn't honor their commitment to him.

Conan will return, either on Fox or on cable. Leno will probably go back to beating Letterman in the ratings. I'll keep on watching Dave's monologues and then switching off unless there's a must-see guest.

I listened to Led Zeppelin I and II, never a big fan. Couldn't stand III and IV, never listened again except when I can't get away from it.

Phil, it was never referred to as yellow. Limed oak was blondish, depending on the particular method and the natural color of the oak. Most of the limed oak (or walnut or mahogany) consoles were veneer, and most often looked like this.

If you can find a Sears catalog from the 50s you'll find lots of listings for limed oak TV and record player consoles and contemporary furniture. Not many color photos though.

Becks playing has become an "orgasmic sensual experience" . His technique now is the totatality of the guitar, from Playing with volume knobs to vibrato bar all at once. When he is on, he is amazing, if he is having an off night he sounds stiff & awkward.

That just doesn't sound appealing at all to me. Makes me queasy.

I'll go listen to Albert Lee. Then I'll feel better.

The name sounds silly to me. It wouldn't matter if the guitar weren't so goofy. As it is, you've got both silly and goofy. Another winning combo for Gibson.

I always drill two small holes in the center of two fret channels (3 and 15 typically) and secure the board with a couple mini metal pins.  They pull right out afterward and the board never shifts.

Yep, you can use one of the tiny numbered wire gauge size drills with a smaller diameter than the fret slot width (I think #74 and above).
