Back in the day I had a Pistols rehearsal tape with this song. Lydon didn't know the lyrics, it made for very fun listening.

Torture.

I'm no suspect for Pistols adulation, but I think this is kinda cute (isn't that the most damning statement for the Sex Pistols: "kinda cute"?), Lydon comes across as a mix of Boy George and Iggy Pop with a hint of off-the-wall Bowie. We all know that he is not a singer in the classic sense, but his voice has authority on this track. And with that kind of music, hitting all the right notes is a waste.

Not bad. But not as fun as the Bruddahs.

Nothing wrong with it to my ears. It's Lydon 2007, I don't expect him to be Lydon 1977, even if he is covering a 1972 Modern Lovers song.

OK, entertaining torture laced with nostalgia tinted memories for some.  I never listened to them in the past, so I'm approaching this with virgin ears.  Just not my cup o' tea, mate.

Bill, you don't need to make apologies for not liking it!

Not an apology Dave, just framing my state of mind when I watched it.  I've never been able to warm up to alternative forms of rock.  I'm just an old mainstream geezer!  I do still like The Clash, Blondie and the like.

Didn't do anything for me, either Bill - no perceptible melody and entirely incoherent lyrics.  "Louie, Louie" blows it out of the water.

The biggest kick for me was hearing Johnny Rotten thank the audience repeatedly at the end and not ironically.

As you should!  Musical tastes here are incredibly diverse and that's a positive feature of our little world at the Outpost.  There's something for everyone!

Personally I prefer Norwegian classical music performed by Swiss folk metal bands.

WOW!!  WOW!!!

I LOVED that!! First thing I've seen online in years that has prompted me to stand up and dance!!

I admit that the Hall of the Mountain King is one of my all-time favorites in classical music, but that was possibly the most kick-ass interpretation of classical that I have ever heard!!  I gotta love the idea of a metal band with bagpipes and bassoon.

Holy crap, I may be a fan of Swiss folk Metal!  How will I explain it to my wife and kids??

But in the folowing clip, they are decsribed as "Pagan Metal".  I'll bet Mark could get into that!

Incidentally, I watched that whole piece about how they created the Hall of the Mountain King. I found it fascinating.

Whatever the hell that is that she is cranking by hand and playing like a keyboard I want one! :o  Could this be the inspiration for the "Keytar"?

Here's another lovely mashup - my wife was reading the weekend section of the paper, yes, I know but I'm old and old habits die hard, that the Hillbenders are bring their bluegrass performance of Tommy to town soon - WTF ???

For your viewing pleasure.....

Hey Lightyear, at 14:40 of the clip I posted, they identify the instrument as a hurdy-gurdy.  Cool. Never seen one before!

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hurdy-gurdy

I would love to hear what they would do with the William Tell overture, the Ride of the Valkeyries, and some similar "greatest classical hits".

I just knew someone else would like it! My first real exposure to classical music was to Grieg (when I was about 5) and he's still my favorite. Music from Peer Gynt sounds great to me whether it's a piano solo or with full orchestra, so why not with a metal band?

One of the pleasures of YT is being able to see live performances, like Marita Solberg singing Solveig's Song. Or to hear Grieg himself.

Very cool I have to say.  I love 2 Cellos as another example of rock treatment of classical music.  BTW, it felt like there should have been an animal sacrifice or something at the end of the song.   ;D

And for the obsessed German barristers that are known to inhabit these environs - here's a RB clip too!

Just not the same though since he doesn't smash it in during a temper tantrum  ;D

Very interesting, I had no idea the hurdy gurdy was actually an instrument.  It appeals to my ears, much like bag pipes do!

I always thought a hurdy-gurdy was an instrument in a box on wheels, used by street musicians (maybe with a dancing monkey).

The Wikipedia page offers this note:

In the eighteenth century the term hurdy-gurdy was also applied to a small, portable "barrel organ" (a cranked box instrument with a number of organ pipes, a bellows and a barrel with pins that rotated and programmed the tunes) that was frequently played by poor buskers (street musicians). Barrel organs require only the turning of the crank to play; the music is coded by pinned barrels, perforated paper rolls, and more recently by electronic modules.[citation needed] The French call the barrel organ the Orgue de Barbarie ("Barbary organ"), and the Germans Drehorgel ("turned organ"), instead of Drehleier ("turning lyre").

And here's a picture of a barrel organ - much closer to what I had in mind...

Page, Bonham and Jones (lol, sounds like a law firm) did all play on the PJ Proby 3-Week Hero record.  It is fairly obvious when you hear it.  Hurdy Gurdy Man I'm not so sure about.

Al, no one has ever accused the Butthole Surfers of being gentle.

JPJ was their producer in the early 90s, it wouldn't surprise me if he played on that track.

PJ Proby... now there's a real loony. Don't get me started.
