This has taken a while but samples from Hipshot should be here on Monday. I am anxious to install one and check it out.
FANTASTIC!!! Could ya get them to do an 8 string version! Ha!
thats great. hopefully it will meet your expectations.
Good news Scott
Here is one unplated sample, looks good :) there have been some slight changes from the original. The bridge now hugs the studs more tightly and the ends of the bridge have a radius. Original '60s studs will no longer work but I will be supplying studs with the bridge. ...now where have I seen that bass before? ;D
I wonder ? It has found a good home :)
Dude!!!! That is awesome!!!! Did they ever send Bill his tailpieces???
Very Nice, Scott! The extra meat under the stud can't be bad and I like the radiused edges.
Lookin' good!

Actually....I was wondering if all that meat would cause any problem in dropping the action down low enough on some old TBirds?

I think the critical dimension for that is the thickness of the 'tray' holding the saddles.

What is the story behind all this?
On the bottom the thickness of the bridge is a bit thicker than a original but the saddles are shorter than originals so getting action nice and low is not a problem. The big change that I was refering to is the material in contact with the sides of the studs, not the bottom or the bridge.

My original supplier seems to have gone out of business, About 6-9 months ago I contacted Hipshot (they are about a hour away) While Bill was trying to get them to make tailpieces for him Bill suggested I contact them to make my bridges. They agreed to make them for me but then after NAMM early this year they got backed up and dropped lots of projects thankfully not mine. I am just glad to have samples and I think it is great that I can say Hipshot makes my product. believe me this is the short version.
I assume that only this prototype is all brass. They will be nickel or chrome, right? Any idea on price point yet?
very nice. Are saddes nothced at all ?
very nice!
No notched saddles, price to be determined and the bridges will be nickle plated.
Yeah, what about the tailpiece? Bill keeps promising, but I haven't seen or heard anything for months.

So Hipshot is going to sell your product worldwide?
Congratulations
One saw, one Reich, one bridge, one Führer of Thunder!
Hipshot is making them but not marketing or distributing them. They will however send customers my way who come looking for a vintage Thunderbird bridge. Still no solid answer on tailpieces.
If they come through on the tailpieces as well, there might be a market for the bridges outside of Thunderbirds - Fenderbirds, other custom builds, etc. That setup would look attractive on lots of basses... and there aren't many options for a quality 2pc bridge setup.
I like the contoured edges too.
Congrats
I mean really! What good is the bridge if ya can't get the right tailpiece??? The tailpieces alone will have a small market of their own. Let's hope Bill can get it together at some point.

Bill, I'll work on him.

This. Carlo could get a hold of these and make his JAEbirds even more accurate. (Hard to imagine those things getting any more badass. )

That would be a great option.
Mine of course came stock with the Badbird :) It now sports two Thunderbuckers as well.(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v102/godofthunder59/jaebirdclose.jpg)(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v102/godofthunder59/Thunderbuckersblacktbird005.jpg)
The ThunderBuckers have been a big hit, I just received sets 41 and 42 from Steve. He also sent the split coil prototype with passive tone circuit. Hope to get that into something soon for testing. This is the switch, treble and 'bass' pots, no volume yet.

Splitcoil in a chrome TB cover? I'm so interested it hurts.
Hey Carlo, are they going to be a reissue of the '80s Tbird split coils or are you going to make a Chrome pickup for Precision lovers (i'd be sold)?
Is that from the broken pickup I got from Mark Hills and shipped to Steve??? I haven't heard anything from Steve yet.

Nope, by 'split coil' I meant coil tapping possibilities. One coil has more winding on it to allow it to be used as a single coil pickup. With switching you can get some different sounds.

No, it's a modded Thunderbucker. Steve's on vacation for most of October in England.
Dig it.

That technic gives also a nice sparkly humbucker sound I've heard.
Hey...isn't this Dr'Bassman's Tailpiece that Hipshot modified or changed slightly???
