Title: Concerts you regret NOT seeing
Post by: Denis on May 26, 2010, 02:42:59 PM
Just as well put this one in as a new thread!

I regret not seeing Deep Purple, Frank Zappa, and BÖC and Black Sabbath on the Black and Blue Tour.

I wanted to see The Clash on the Give Em Enough Rope tour but my parents were not cool with that.  I did get a t shirt from it though a few months later.  It was $8 as I recall.  Bo Diddley opened.

I regret not seeing Kiss on their first German tour in 76 (we had a math test the next day), the Ian Gillan Band (the jazzy outfit) and Black Sabbath with Ian Gillan (I thought they would tour at least once more, little did I know a Purple reunion was looming).

I did see Randy Rhoads with Ozzy opening for Whitesnake (the Moody/Marsden line-up). This will break people's hearts here, but I thought he was - much like the young John Sykes - sloppy.

I think I would have liked to see one of the RAH gigs of reunited Cream - tickets sold so quickly, I had no chance.

And I guess I would have liked to have seen UFO in their prime with Michael Schenker and early Judas Priest before Rob joined the Village People. His satin kimonos were always so very fetching!

I forgot PAL/Paice Ashton Lord. They deplorably cancelled their German dates when a nervous Tony Ashton fell into the orchestra pit at a Brit gig.

New Year's Eve 1981. It was a choice between Ozzy with Randy at (I think) the L.A. Sports Arena and Motley Crue at the Troubadour in Hollywood. The Motley show meant hanging out with the band backstage after the show and I was convinced they'd be stars in the next year, so I wouldn't get that kind of access forever. Had a GREAT time with Mick Mars after the show. He was waxing nostalgic about finally being on the edge of 'making it', and was really enjoying the ride. At the time I didn't know how long a road he'd traveled to that point, but I could tell it meant a lot to him to be where he was. That night, I knew I'd made the right choice. Also, I knew Ozzy and Randy would be back later in the tour...

I can't say I regret seeing Motley that night, but I obviously never got to see Randy after the accident a few months later. Such is life.

I passed up Iron Maiden for Night Ranger in 1984 or so! I enjoyed the Night Ranger show, but it would have been cool to see Maiden - it was the Powerslave tour - never seen them live, but I just wasn't as into them at that point.

I wanted to see Ozzy - it was the Bark at the Moon tour - but my dad wouldn't let me go, because we would have just gotten back to Japan from a trip back to the States - Night Ranger was Japan too, the NHK Hall in Tokyo.

Another one I blew off - Kazumi Watanabe, with Jeff Berlin on bass and Bill Bruford on drums - but it came out on DVD recently, so I've kind of seen it now...

I think my favorite show in Japan that I did see was Deep Purple in 1985 on the Perfect Strangers tour - "Destiny Brought Them Together Again!" (Or so read the t-shirt)

I wish I had seen Stevie Ray Vaughan and/or Frank Zappa, but never had the opportunity...

I regret not seeing Led Zep. I had tix for the tour that was cancelled when Robert Plant's son died and never got another chance. Bonham died within a year or so after. Would have liked to have seen ELP but missed them a couple of times. I also passed on Skynyrd in the late 70's and 10cc on one Thanksgiving night around the same time. I would have really liked to have seen that one. I also missed Queen. Later in my punk years I missed the Dead Kennedys, Black Flag and the Minutemen. Would have loved to have seen all three. I did see Zappa close to ten times including his last tour with a band. Went both nights. I also got to see Floyd on the Animals tour which to this day ranks as one of the best shows I have ever seen.

I had tickets to see SRV when he died.
I had tickets to see Steve Miller Band at their zenith and they cancelled. Never got to see them.
I had tickets to Black Sabbath with Ozzy here in Adelaide when they cancelled the Australian tour.
I regret not seeing Led Zep.
I regret not seeing the last Doobie Bros Tour.
I regret not seeing Govt Mule before Woody died. Or ever for that matter.

Uwe - I saw KISS on their first tour in Chicago, and they were excellent.  The openers, Rush, were actually pretty bad at that point.  I saw Sabbath with Gillan (I interviewed him after the show), but you didn't miss anything.  They were pretty mundane.  They did "Smoke on the Water" for an encore, though.  The best part of the show might have been Bev Bevan.  Even Gillan didn't seem to be really in top form.  He joked in the interview that they were contemplating working up "Telephone Line" as their encore.

I was going to get tix for Zeppelin when the news of Bonham's death hit.

I can't remember who I passed up last year or two to go see David Lindley.  His solo work is eclectic, and that's a HUGE understatement.  I had to leave after 30 minutes.  I wish I'd gone to see the band that was in town. They were a new act.

Kiss in the fall of 1975 at the Capitol Theatre - it would have been my first concert.
UFO at the Morris Stage in NJ in 1978. I had tickets for UFO three times over the years. This show was the "middle" one - and the only one of the 3 that Schenker actually showed up for. I was flat on my back with the case of mono from hell.

I saw Sabbath with Gillan. Sabbath with Dio was MUCH better. Gillan just didn't seem like a good fit for them. If I'm remembering right, Quiet Riot opened up the show and sounded and played much better.

....................Later in my punk years I missed...... Black Flag.............

Funny, they must come through Houston every couple of months in the late 70's and always played at the Island ( at the time the only punk club in town )  Never knew that they where special until much later -  just another band playing in fire trap dump that was home away from home for a lot of us - on a busy night you had a 50/50 chance of the fire marshall pulling the plug.  I bet I've seen them a dozen times and can't remember a damn thing

I have two that I regret.

First, I didn't go when Emerson, lake and Palmer came to the coliseum at Washington State University.  I heard it took three semis to bring in their sound gear.

Second, when Sinatra did his final tour with Dean Martin and Liza Minnelli, I could have found tickets - but I missed it.

I regret both.

That's the one. Eight weeks. Fever, swollen lymph nodes, complete exhaustion. "Kissing Disease" is a far too whimsical nickname. I remember trying to pick up my bass to learn a song, only to put it back in the case after 5 minutes because it felt like it weighed 100 lbs.

Never got to see Jimi Hendrix.

Born in 57 many of the late 60's bands were dead or disbanded before i was old enough to see them.  I did get to see the Cream reunion at MSG and Cactus At BB Kings so 2 off my wish list...

last Yes tour with Jon Anderson - one last time would have been great but who knew back then

Missed Paice Ashton Lord, too... my "buddies" bought tickets and didn't bother to let me know...

Hendrix played a gig at a club in a place near Heathrow called Hounslow, around the corner from where I lived, right under the flightpath...

If it's a player I regret never having had the chance to see, then Duane and Berry easily top the list, and then some...

I knew that. Strapps were the opener for IGB at the Rainbow, that is how the Strapps vid came into existence in the first place, they used IGB's videoing equipment. But given the chance to see either one of them now, I'd go with Strapps. I just love Ross Staggs highly mannered singing/talking and their layered keyboards. Damn punk for killing this band though with appropriate haircuts their music could have passed as new wave too.

Mott The Hoople

They were the headliners for the Queen show I didn't see.  They were excellent (Ariel Bender was on guitar), but they did the shortest set I ever saw in a major concert.  I think their entire show, with encore, only went about an hour and ten minutes.  On the reverse, I'm now glad I didn't pursue the shows in London last fall.  We had talked about going, but without Buffin on for the whole show, I might have been let down a little.  I'll probably get the DVD when it's available.

My musical taste seems to be slowly shifting further back in time. The older I get, the more I dig back in time.
Nowadays my musical taste seems to be centered somewhere in the late sixties and early seventies.

I'm digging bands as Humble Pie, Faces, Small Faces, Free, etc etc.

I was born in 1968. So I guess I basicly regret being born 20 years too late and seeing any of these awesome bands and being there when "the times were changing"...  ;)

Now that you mention it, I'm sorry that I didn't get to see Humble Pie when Marriott was around.  I know people who have seen them that said Marriott was riveting in his prime.  Lately, I've been on a Marriott kick.  I downloaded a '73 Humble Pie show from Winterland off of Wolfgang's Vault, and have a bunch of odds and ends from his later bands.  Steve Marriott and The Original Receivers was pretty good, even as Marriott's addiction got worse.   In the last years, his contract rider included - a secured area immediately behind the drum kit for Marriott's personal and private use.

I saw Marriot about 4 weeks before his death in a small pub on the Old Kent Road. There were only about 50 ppl there but he seriously rocked the joint.

Steve Marriot was the man.  Got to see him 4 or 5 times ( mostly with the PIE) . Once with Bob Tench from Jeff Beck Group II as second guitarist.   if my memory hasn't failed me AC/DC opened for them one tour i saw.
Marriot was always great and actually not a bad guitarist when he focused on the job at hand.  He is the original Rock Star for me.  Before his death supposedly he had cleaned up  his act and was gettingready for a big comeback...  Shame

Rob if you are going back in time I recommend 2 groups for you that you may not know -  Cactus and Rhinoceros.

Never heard of the band Rhinoceros until a day ago , when I read the blog that started the "classic rock lost diamonds" thread.
Cactus I do know.

Rhinoceros - first album is amazing - downhill after that

Regret not going to see;

Boston on their first tour.
ZZ Top don't remember what tour it was but it was before Eliminator. Had the tickets but the show was cancelled. The next time they came to town we were booked in a club, we "opened" for their opening band (they were booked to play the club we were at after getting offstage at the ZZ show).

I missed seeing Oingo Boingo, damnit!
Missed The Tubes, had to work.

Peter Frampton had to cancel the gig he had here last week because he lost all his gear in the Nashville floods. I saw him twice back in the day. The first time was around the "Comes Alive" era and the second was a few years later. A few weeks after the second time I saw him he lost all of his equipment in a plane crash, guy has bad luck with gear!

I almost got to open for Stevie Ray Vaughn in a club but they cancelled, we played the gig anyway :D

I saw Randy Rhoads with Ozzy just a few weeks before he was killed. I had the opposite experience, I thought he was one of the most amazing guitarists I had ever seen and I had seen Eddie Van Halen at the height of his powers. I think that if he had lived he would have eclipsed Eddie.

I saw Black Sabbath on the Heaven & Hell album tour. Dio was amazing he was, IMO, better than Ozzy was in Black Sabbath.

The cool thing about me going to see The Stones in '75 was that my 2 sisters that took me saw them in Dallas in '65.  Back then they really dressed up to go to the show and their dates wore suits!  I think this was the same tour ('65) where they were famously booed off the stage in San Antonio.  Mick Jagger stated he'd never play "Cowtown USA" again.  I guess it took him 10 years to forgive. :)

I also regret never seeing King Crimson with Brufford / Wetton

I saw them in '74 when they first went to the four-piece line-up.  They were at the Auditorium Theater.  Bruford's kit took up 2/3 of the stage.  You can find some old YouTube footage of the band before Jamie Muir left (Lark's Tongue in Aspic, Part 1).  What I realized after seeing that was that Bruford actually played the small kit.  After Muir left, he had to inherit ALL the percussion parts and gear.  It was amazing watching him run around his little cage all night.  And Wetton was in top form in those days.

Glenn Hughes (the moustached Village People biker, not the Trapeze/Deep Purple bassist of the same name if possibly not same sexual orientation) was not gay?  :o First thing I hear. I thought he died of Aids (which doesn't make him necessarily gay, I know).

Denis declares inner knowledge of Village People and Uwe can quote their names... Mark... Mark...? there are outings going on...  ;D

I can't complain about the time I saw SAHB in '76 - 2nd on the bill to the Who, and preceded by Little Feat... The Outlaws were also on the bill, as was Chapman's Streetwalkers - The day was just a total stunner...

Got to see Dixie Dregs supporting Sea Level in '78 - that was a crackling show...

Missed King Crimson, truly gutted to have missed the first Peter Gabriel solo tour (effectively Alice Cooper's WTMN band + Fripp) but did see Boz with Bad Co in '74, and at a pub gig with a pickup band called Chuck Farley in the eighties...

Really glad I caught Zappa - saw him twice at Hammersmith - the four piece lineup that recorded Zoot Allures (AWESOME!) and the nights they recorded for Sheik so plenty of TITTIES AND BEER... the second time he was conducting much more, so the first show was the best for me...

Something I regret seeing... Alex Harvey came on for the encores when Cheap Trick played a one-off (not with Petersen) - I was right up the front and snapping away, but he was blitzed - it would have been comic if it wasn't so sad; Neilsen tried to get a guitar on him (so it wasn't round his knees) but it had to have the strap wrapped round his neck... he died about 6 months later...

But Denis also said their relationship wasn't anything deep!

I never! I didn't! No!

I'd have liked to have seen Rush back in those days... John Rutsey passed two years back now, just short of his 56th...

I saw them open for KISS in '76 or so.  They were actually pretty bad.  By the time I got to open for them during Caress of Steel, they were really good.  Peart definitely helped solidify and alter their direction for the better.

Nice tour to have opened for them...! 8)

Curiously, I still do not have the first LP on CD, though I have all the others (excluding compilations)

I still have not seen Rush but hope to catch them on their upcoming North American tour.  They are going to be playing Moving Pictures in its entirety!  My first taste of Rush was Caress Of Steel.  I had been hanging out at my girlfriends house back in '75 and remember this strange guitar sound coming from her older brothers room.  I ended spending more time with the older brother listening to Rush!

I saw Rush during the Roll the Bones tour with Primus as a support @ Wembly Arena. I just walked around for 2 days after the show with my mouth agape catching flies. I'd heard it all before but somehow seeing it live made it real.

Ha... I was at that gig, too

My best memories of seeing Rush are the white rabbits that appeared out of nowhere (they made Harvey look decidely tiny) and the tour when they showed the Countdown video for the first time - never seen so many dropped jaws...

They first toured the UK in '77 sort of in support of ATWAS - only time I saw GL use the blue tear-drop precision - I bought the monster program book on the last UK tour - nearly had all of the originals, including the first; still sort of made (no) sense (to my wife)... ;D

I'm fairly certain that the first time I saw Rush they played 2112 in it's entirety - I call this the Kimono phase.

And, yes, I had a Kimono :-[

In '77 they played all but the acoustic interlude... for their 30th anniversary tour (UK 30 years - 2007, not the 30r shows) they played the complete side...

Oh yeah... a big regret for the RTB tour was not buying the full front skull shirt... never seen it up on the 'bay, either...

Really? The entire album, eh? Hmm, that might be worth the price of admission. I've seen them several times but that would be special. And "Caress of Steel" is a great album!

Damn... 8) I got the kicking the skull shirt - believe it or not, I (think - may not have the really ugly Hemispheres shirt) still have 1 of all their tour shirts, right back to 1977 with the tour dates on the back and a rather misshapen starman on the front... My daughter wore the first tour shirt for their last UK tour, which got some appreciative remarks...

I remember them playing the "Fear" trilogy back-to-back more than once... they played a fair amount of "Caress..." on the '78 tour

No news of a UK leg...?

I read about the North American leg in Classic Rock which is a UK publication.  I'd love to hear some Caress stuff live.  On ATWAS all we got were opener Bastille Day and then Lakeside Park.  I really liked The Fountain Of Lamneth.

Definitely played that in '78, with a nice new unreleased at the time tune... some song called Cygnus X-1... ;)
