I'm not exactly a fan of Trogly's YouTube videos (can't stand the voice).
But this April fools joke is quite elaborate!
You have to give him that.

Just speculation but Trogly probably knows about this forum and what our gripes with Gibson basses are. This was his way of getting back at us for talking smack about him.
I should have watched until the end about the two French guys. Still, would be nice if this provided some fruit for thought at Gibson about what's possible for their basses.
I see that it's about 10 minutes long. With Trogly, that means there's about 20 seconds of actual information. The guy is unable to be anything but a colossal bore.
If he knows about us, he probably doesn't care.

True and he's being paid by the minute.
It's lovingly done and worth watching every second. Recommended viewing. I hadn't read Rob's intro when I startet the vid, so I watched incredulously, but fascinated until the Victories with three-point-bridges cropped up  - that and presenting a double octave fretboard as a dedicated slap bass gave it away for me. ;D ;D
My respects for the attention to detail that went into it. And I herewith grant absolution for swiping my idea to have a 60ies Rev IV done in a 'Goddess'-series 'ladyburst' fin (the 'Leon Wilkeson Signature' :) ). I'm sure they drew Inspiration from this forum of fora and maybe even had a Dutch collaborator - man kann es nicht wissen ...
Ironically, it leaves a bitter taste. Some ideas were quite good. The aged satin fin NonRevs were tempting ...
If a Leon Wilkeson signature bass actually came out for real, I think I would have to buy that one. To me that was the most interesting thing in the whole spiel.
In a girlie fin?
And shouldn't a Lynyrd Skiynyrd bass be Confederate Silverburst rather than Union Blue? ;)

Well, I guess you could say the Goddess fin is a bit like the sky blue color of the early Confederate uniform trousers was. Before they (also) ran out of dye that is, those industrial production experts. 8) They really should have listened to Rhett Butler while there was time.

Gable was brilliant in that role.
I wouldn't care what kind of fin it had. If it was Leon Wilkeson, I would want it.
BTW, Clark Gable was brilliant in just about every movie he was in.
Fair enough! Roger Glover had kind words for him as a person - Purple and Skynyrd toured as a double package around the millenium.

I think most people found Wilkeson easy to get along with. I think in real life he was pretty humble. I never really met him, but did once catch a glimpse of him in Mississippi in the 1980s.
Trogly reminds me of Eric Idle as Mr. Smoketoomuch in the Travel Agency Sketch, and I'm Michael Palin begging him to "shut your bloody gob!"
I felt a lot of love in the video , and hope it is watched in Nashville .

You can just turn off the sound - easy!
Here's a link to the page he pulled all the images from:

The same thing George Harrison suggested doing when the Spice Girls were on TV.

No thank you!
But there's nice pics of non-existing basses, ole grumpers!

Only at MGGA - do they offer hats?
Getting back to Leon Wilkeson for a moment. He was raised in Florida, but had been born in Rhode Island. Since Berry Oakley was from Illinois, that means, of course, you had the bassists from the two best known Southern rock bands who were actually Northerners. This probably has more relevance for Oakley since he spent more time than Wilkeson had in the North.
In that case a Union Blue signature TBird would have been fine for him.

I think it would have. Blue is a great color anyway, although, of course you don't see blue basses very much. Still, I personally like it for basses. I only have one blue bass, though--Dano Hodad bass, metallic blue. ;D

I have no idea what you're talking about.
Whatever. Nothing Trogly does interests me.
It bothers me that Trogly is such a bad guitarist and musician, given that his job is to... I dunno. Film himself opening boxes and spreading Wikipedia-tier information on guitars. And that adenoidal wee voice. I thought he was twelve or so. Nothing he does is good, worthwhile or useful. Why is he big on YouTube?
Because, Alan, YouTube is the triumph of all mediocrity. Mediocrity is everywhere.

I went back to the video. One of the French guys who had participated in the project had recently posted. Someone had expressed doubts about the Leon Wilkeson bass. The French graphic artist said he was 100% sure Leon had purchased one exactly like that toward the end of his life. It's authentic, just maybe not a bass people associate Leon Wilkeson with. Just like people don't associate the EB-1 with Chas Chandler that he bought shortly before he died.
This looks like the beastie?

I found this pic. I don't think the pic itself is very good, but the description does provide a few details about the bass.

What made me start watching his videos is that he likes the least-likeable Gibson era. I have a soft spot for the less conformist. There are enough 59 burst lovers in the world, give me a Sonex guy from time to time. I also like that old hippie Wishnevsky and even read his book.
The thought of a book on Wish is enough to give one twinges . I've only seen one Wishbass in the flesh , and it did not disappoint . It truly was as awful as I had expected .
And my hopes were low .
That metal extension had nothing to do with his arm or the air crash, he just liked to play his basses in a headstock almost vertical position à la Bill Wyman (= headstock close to your head, strap attached above your breastbone) - something a TBird is not really designed for, it balances best horizontally.

He preferred that position already as a young man in 1973 - with any bass.

I never claimed his basses were any good, but he's an interesting person. That is why I bought his book and not his bass.
My guess on what happened with Leon Wilkeson is this. He was already playing bass in the upright (Bill Wyman) position anyway even before the plane crash. But in the crash his arm, of course, got very damaged and the doctors considered amputating it. After the injury, he was never able to fully extend his left arm--making it impossible to play a bass any other way except vertically. Most likely, though, he had to play at an even steeper angle than before.
I can identify with this a little. Because of whiplash injuries playing pickstyle puts some pressure on my neck. I find myself with no choice but to sometimes "try" to play fingerstyle, even though that has never been my preference. But the change from pickstyle to fingerstyle can make a big difference on my neck.
