Title: 60s/70s Aussie bands worth a listen
Post by: Freuds_Cat on January 16, 2009, 05:43:29 AM

I figured that since I have the benefit of hearing/seeing European and American bands from the 60's and 70's that I would never have heard but for the excellent pool of knowledge in this forum I might try and make a few of you aware of some of the better Aussie bands of this era that didnt make it big in your countries.

I know there are quite a few Bob Daisley appreciators here. Have a listen to one of the bands he was in before making the move to the UK.

This is Kahvas Jute (Quite Cream-ish)

The Masters Apprentices were an Adelaide band that began the year I was born 1964.
This song was recorded in 1969.  very Black Sabbath-ish. What year was Sabbaths first LP released?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d26ZPnSsP2o

Their biggest hit was recorded in 1970 about 200 meters from where I work today.
This was apparently recorded in 2 takes live after spending a few guzzling hours at the Exeter Hotel in Rundle St which still looks the same today and still has live bands.

Thanks for the enlightenment!  I'm going to have to track down some Kahvas Jute.

I don't know much about Australian bands, but I do like Billy Thorpe & The Aztecs:

What about The Angels? (BTW, they were marketed as Angel City in the US). And they're still around in some form.

Their debut single (1976?), a Vanda/Young production.

I don't know much about the Aussie bands of that era but some old buds of mine, The Frigid Pink(house of the rising sun remake) did an Aussie tour in 69 or 70 and had the time of their lives. Their bass player and drummer had to wait untill they graduated from high school to do the tour.

They said the audiences ,and the people in general, were absolutely wonderful. They sold a whole lot of records there too :)

This is an interesting one.    The Angels were from Adelaide and I remember when they started. The song in this vid was their first hit and pretty much the platform upon which they rose to cult status here in Oz. I have done fair few shows with them and Aussie Dave and myself know guitarist of 6 years Bob Spencer through an Aussie gear forum. I will leave my personal issues with Doc (The lead singer) out of this thread.
This song cannot be played in any pub in Australia without people calling out the following:

Band: Am I ever gonna see your face again
Crowd: No way get f***ed, f*** off.

There was something I came across years ago and Bob confirmed my suspicions recently.

This song was actually pinched from (no less than) The mighty Quo!

Have a listen to this

I've heard the story about the crowd response before.

No idea about the band personalities, I just know them from their songs (See Your Face, Marseilles, Take A Long Line, No Exit).

Wow, that's pretty blatant.  :o  I mean, there's only 12 notes and all that, but it's not hard to avoid writing the exact same song.

Interestingly the Angels guitarist John Brewster played in Aussie band The Party boys with Alan lancaster in the 80's.

Hope they had a good laugh about it.

We knew singer John Swan from doing supports here in Adelaide with his band Swanee and ended up doing a few shows with the Party Boys when he was singing with them. On different occasions I got to meet Alan Lancaster and Joe Walsh which was cool.

The list of people who have played in that band is quite unbelievable.

Kevin Borich
Joe Walsh (Eagles, James Gang)
Eric Burdon (Animals etc)
Graham Bonnett (Rainbow etc)
James Reyne  (Australian crawl)
John Swan  (Swanee, Fraternity and various others)
Angry Anderson (Rose Tatoo)
Richard Clapton
Marc Hunter (Dragon)
Alan Lancaster (Quo)
John Brewster (The Angels)
Mark Evans (AC/DC)
Robin Riley  (Rose Tatoo, Mega boys with Vince Contarino))
Harvey James (Sherbet)
Graham Bidstrup (Angels)
Richard Harvey
Mal Eastick (Stars)
Steve Williams (AC/DC)
Brad Carr
Barton Price
Vince Contarino (The Dukes, Mega Boys with Rob Riley, The Zep Boys)
Stuart Fraser
Dorian West
Various others

You know in each country there is that song that gets played by the DJ at the end of the night?
Well for the last 30 years at least this is THAT song in Australia.

The only Aussies who dont know this song are the ones that turned up on the last boat.

An old Angel City fan here.   I saw them open for The Kinks.  They are the only band I ever saw whose light show was entirely floor lighting.  At the time, my band was covering "Marseilles", one of the very few songs that I got to sing lead vocals on.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JIIZhWCtKHw

I worked up vocals for this with some friends of ours, and got up to front them, to the surprise of my band.

This post doesn't quite fit the criteria, but V. Spy V. Spy (mostly 80's) are one of my favorite bands of all time, and Craig Bloxom is the reason I picked up the bass...

To fit into the thread, Flash & the Pan are awesome as well.

You Aussies got it good - some great music has come out from down under.

Thanks Steve, I agree. Considering the small size of our population our music industry from the 60's through to the 90's was amazingly  prolific. Through that era it was relatively easy to make a living. Very different these days. The industry here now is very fragmented and live music venues are a lot less common.

This weekend I found a great (new to me) band from Australia. Although they are a contemporary band, the 60s and 70s influences are obvious.

The Aussie equivalent of the Black Crowes, Humble Pie, Faces:

Chisel are 80's but Don Walkers songwriting and keys playing is definitely worthy of much respect.  I also love Ian Moss' guitar playing. Not to mention his voice. I think the thing with Chisel was/is that they were one of the biggest bands in Aussie music history but a lot of people here find Jimmy Barnes screaming a bit hard to handle even if they love the music of the band.

What about Bob Daisley, isn't he Austrlian as well?

And I do like the Bee Gees - all eras.

Hoodoo Gurus were a great 80's band. They did some of the most honest, true to the genre rock shows I've ever seen. Played with them (support band) at Selina's in Coogee once and at the Old Lion Ballroom in Adelaide. Nice guys but a great live band IMHO.

Bob Daisley left us for the UK in the 70's. I dont know of him being involved in Aussie bands here since then.

Bee Gees never really did it for me. They left Oz in the late 60's, not sure that theyv'e been back here either.

Alan Lancaster and John Coglin IMHO are what made Quo ROCK!  Without either of them they are just another poppy rock band to my ears.

In that case, you need to get hold of the first 2 albums - Midnight Oil, and Head Injuries.  And, both albums fall into the 70's so are on topic in this thread :-)

I remember seeing the Oils at the Royal Antler pub in Narrabeen before Peter Garrett shaved his head.

Yeah, the Oils were good.
I had a particular fondness for the 10...1 album, since they mentioned us bloody Yanks and Pine Gap.
Peter Garrett and his gang of protesters used to frequent the Gap every now and again..just to show how much they cared.

Good, tight band.

Spy V. Spy, however, are on my all-time top 10 list of favorites bands.
Craig Bloxom is a really good bassist who can belt it out with the best of 'em.
For my money, one of the best bassist/singers anywhere.

Midnight Oil... Awesome outfit... I got the Scream album as a big-box promo, with extra tracks ("written in the heart" and "used and abused") and a 1 song video...

Gotta agree with Mark... Scott... you just have to get the first two...

This is more subtle - outro track to the first LP - a beautifully understated guitar solo... cool video too...

The Easybeats were a cool 60's band, although most (if not all) of the members were transplants from Europe (aren't we all?!?).
George Young and George Vanda later formed one of my favorites, Flash & the Pan.
