"The keys were each connected to a light that turned on when you pressed them. The lights then shined through a sequence of holes punched into two discs that rotated via a motor.  :o Of course, you could have also taken a stick and banged it in time on some piece of metal or some animal skin over a hollow piece of wood just to see how that works ...

I doubt whether the Rhythmicon would have really conquered the dance floors.
