Overdrive helps for sure ...  but I feel like a T-bird (or TB Plus) pickup through a clean DI still gets pretty decent growl!

The Bass Zone / What the heck does "growl" even mean?
« on: January 25, 2016, 09:28:11 AM »
In another thread http://bassoutpost.com/index.php?topic=9939.0 it was noted that the bass sounds growly.  I didn't hear it as especially growly. The main thing I could hear was a lot of strings vibrating against frets due to aggressive pick playing with a bright amp, which is a sound I happen to like, but ... is that "growl"? I never thought of that as "growl" per se.  The mids sounded pretty scooped and I couldn't really hear what sort of texture the lows might have with the example played.

To me, "growl" is something that happens when the lows have a sort of purring texture not unlike a big cat rumbling ... I don't know quite what causes this impression, but I think it's happening in the lower overtones more than the fundamental  ... but I just intuited that meaning of "growl" from the literal meaning of the word, and since it's not like there's a dictionary we all agree on, maybe it doesn't mean that to other people at all and I'm out on a limb here.

What do you guys think?  Sometimes we use these weird metaphorical words and they're hard to pin down...

Don't get me started on "warm", which is probably the least meaningful audio adjective ever.

Prostate checkup is way quicker than that if you just get it done along with the rest of annual physical (which you are doing anyway, RIGHT?).

Terrible news.  For such an adventurous artist, he had unusually wide appeal.  My Facebook feed is basically nothing but Bowie right now.

I have to get the new album ... really impressed by Lazarus.   Amazing way for an artist to depart.

My favorite old Bowie song is this one... I still like slap bass when it suits the song, and this is one of the weirdest songs where it fits well:

The Bass Zone / Re: how many basses do you bring to gigs and why?
« on: January 08, 2016, 07:11:18 AM »
I bring whichever I'm going to play (90% of the time it's the Gibson LPB-1), plus usually a cheapo Danelectro DC circa 1999 as a backup in case I break a string.

When I was in a more proggish band that did material I could barely play, the Dano became my main gig bass for a while because it weighs nothing and has a skinny neck and the sound worked for the band. I'm not sure it looked the part (too surfy) but nobody complained - people occasionally complimented me on it too.

Too bad he only noodled around playing leads on one sound!  Surely with all those controls you could get something else from it?

The G3 worked really well for a certain 90s-era "punk" band ....  like 'em or not that was an assertive pick sound for sure!

I forget if I've posted this before... but if you're going to fight off a ceiling-mounted shark at the club, you need a bass with some heft to it.

I wouldn't pay $3k for it, but I think it's gorgeous.

Oh man, I wanna go back to Scotland so bad... what a beautiful country. I never got up north, only Edinburgh, Glasgow, and the Isle of Arran.

The difference in regional accent between Edinburgh and Glasgow was surprising to my American ears: Edinburgh sounded like American English with a few odd vowels thrown in;  Glasgow ... everyone I met seemed so friendly, but I was constantly embarrassed by not understanding a word anyone said!
