Gibson Basses / The Reverse-Non-Reverse is finally done
« on: May 04, 2022, 12:40:20 PM »
Finally got a proper pickguard made for it.  Probably having a luthier thin out the neck closer to the Reverse's profile, but other than that it's done.

Second pic with its fraternal twin.  And with the silver-cap knobs which I think look better on this bass to balance out the rear section.

Gibson Basses / Real NR or really good copy?

Can't tell if this is a one-off left-handed NR or just a really good copy.

Gibson Basses / 2018 Thunderbird - should this have passed QA?
« on: August 24, 2021, 11:51:42 AM »
All jokes aside about Gibson's QA, I have no idea how this was even made and then passed any sort of QA they have.  This is a left-handed 2018 that I got used.  I would never have accepted this if I got it new for the prices they were charging.  Although it plays fine and the bridge and pickups and strings all seem in-line with the neck, it looks like the bridge and pickups are off-center within the center block, so in reality it looks like there's about 1/8" more wood on the left side of the center block.  I can't imagine how this ended up like this.  I emailed Gibson late last week to ask, but haven't heard back yet.

Gibson Basses / Which nickel tuners for 2018 Thunderbird?
« on: August 09, 2021, 08:33:58 AM »
So I kinda bought a lefty 2018 Thunderbird in Ebony.  Arriving this week.  I love the black hardware on my 2013 bursts, but for the black one I want nickel hardware.  Putting in Thunderbuckers, too.  The only thing I'm not sure about is the tuners. Most of the ones I like aren't available in nickel for some reason.  It seems the only two potential drop-ins available in nickel are Hipshot Ultralites or Schaller M4 90.  Anyone know others I'm missing?

The Hipshots are pretty expensive, and the Schallers I'm hesitant about because I really don't like the feel of the M4S I have on my BC Rich.  And they only seem to be available directly from Schaller, so shipping from Germany could take quite a while.

Thanks.

Gibson Basses / 2005 Gibson Thunderbird for sale spotted
« on: April 06, 2021, 02:29:52 PM »
Hopefully this is the right forum for this since I'm not selling it. I went by Mas Hino's shop in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, to see if he could do some work on my NR. They have a gorgeous 2005 on the wall for sale. Looked new to me. No idea what price since they just got it in, but if anyone's interested, here's their contact info.

Gibson Basses / Thunderbird truss rod cover screws
« on: January 12, 2021, 11:06:18 AM »
I'm finding it amazingly impossible to source replacement black truss rod cover screws for my Thunderbird.  One went missing.  Gibson is of course no help whatsoever.  Does anyone know where to find these?  It's the flat Phillips head ones.

Thanks.

Gibson Basses / NBD: RNR Thunderbird
« on: December 28, 2020, 10:57:05 AM »
After way too long at the luthier, my RNR Thunderbird is home.  This is a 2013 NR that I had converted to left-handed after flipping a photo of one upside down and thinking how cool it looked.  Pickguard isn't ready yet, but I'll update this when it is. Due to space constraints and my having no need for a tone knob, it's just VV now.  I had a new truss rod cover made for it with the Gibson logo "right side up," but won't put it on until I'm done adjusting the truss rod to my liking.

Gibson Basses / 2013 Thunderbird truss rod cover screw size?
« on: March 12, 2020, 07:59:18 AM »
Anyone know the screw size for these?  It's the black flat-headed ones for my TRC cover.  One's gone missing.  I guess I'll need another round of toothpicks in there.  Amazing how quickly the screws won't tighten down anymore.

Gibson Basses / Thunderbird pickguard with logo
« on: November 03, 2017, 09:09:02 AM »
My 2013 left-handed Thunderbird pickguard became warped and cracked.  Long story short, although my luthier said their supplier could make the pickguard with logo, turns out the luthier got a sticker and applied it after the fact and I think it looks like crap (some lines thicker than others).  I can also peel it up with my fingernail.  Are there any better options?

Thanks.

The Outpost Cafe / Motorhead reference on beer can
« on: September 05, 2017, 09:57:32 AM »
I like seeing stuff that's printed on the bottoms of beer cans.  Here's one from my local (and favorite) brewery, Other Half Brewing.  It's from their beer All Citra Everything.
