Title: Outpost CD
Post by: Freuds_Cat on October 08, 2010, 08:29:59 PM
Well since no one else seems to want to do it  :P I will organise it if everyone is happy with that arrangement.

Well, since I've got a CD in the works, I don't think the band would mind letting a song out.  I also recorded with the Embassy, so it fits with this crowd.   8)

Is there a deadline?
Title: Re: Outpost CD
Post by: Freuds_Cat on October 09, 2010, 02:33:45 AM
As far as deadlines go I figure we first find out who is interested in contributing. Then get an idea who has songs ready to go, who has songs currently in the works (Uwe obviously falls into this category) and who wants a bit of time to get something together. To start with I dont think its that important to rush things but as we go along I will make deadlines clear.

Over the next week or so it would be good if those interested make a comment in this thread to that effect.

I will contribute a song.

I guess what is the best quality  & how to submit them is next?

Shipping 100+ CD's from Australia might be pricey?

Another thing is maybe not even bothering with a hard copy?

Doing it all digital makes life easy.

I'm in to.
I've recorded 9 out of 11 songs on Kharma Baby on my Les Paul Bass.
One song was recorded on the Epiphone Jack Casady Signature with Gibson Les Paul Bass pickup.
So we could choose any of these songs for my contribution.

Good points John. I was thinking of having a digital end product. Mediafire, Soundclick or Bandcamp being options for hosting. Or all three I guess.

For those interested in seeing what this will look like here is a list of those sites.  If you have a different music hosting site that you think is good feel free to let me know.

Barkless Dog on  Soundclick
http://www.soundclick.com/bands/default.cfm?bandID=578947&content=music (http://www.soundclick.com/bands/default.cfm?bandID=578947&content=music)

Dudepit CD on Mediafire
http://www.mediafire.com/?tsaa35exj1i4rry (http://www.mediafire.com/?tsaa35exj1i4rry)

One of my original projects on Bandcamp
http://88mphaustralia.bandcamp.com/album/vanishing-point (http://88mphaustralia.bandcamp.com/album/vanishing-point)

I can do a cover/sleeve in pdf for download with all the required details as per Robs effort on the last CD. Probably not quite as good as his but I promise  it wont be bad.  8). *Edit: Unless Rob would like to do that part of it again?

This way people can download the Audio and jacket themselves if they want to make a stack of CD's, or just one for the CD rack.

I can setup some ftp space for contributors to upload audio files to.
File formats preferably AIFF, WAV or Flac

I have asked my producer/engineer mate Scotty if he will master it and he has agreed. He is very experienced and I'm very comfortable that he will do a great job as usual.

Online hosting is fine, one thing to keep in mind is that the various hosts have limits on free accounts. It may be a size limit per upload or a total account limit. Or a time limit -- e.g. with my free Mediafire account, I have to log in at least once every 30 days to keep my files up.

I 'd love to be involved - I'll mention this to the guys I'm working with tomorrow and see what they say... I have some live stuff from last year with the fretless RD that I might be able to edit... It would be nice to get some new studio stuff, so... more relevant... nice to get the Peter Cook involved...?

No worries Mark, I dont think we have to have a tight deadline on this. I will wait until I have a good idea who wants to contribute and when they can have songs ready by and once I have a clearer idea of this I will suggest a time frame.

As far as a digital album is concerned then we are obliged to abide by the hosting companys policies.
Most of them quote something similar to the Bandcamp one here:
http://bandcamp.com/copyright (http://bandcamp.com/copyright)

An option would be to have 2 versions. One digital online and the other a seperate CD only which includes covers.
I dunno, opinions, suggestions, ideas?

Personally, I think all-original is the way to go. I should have piped up earlier, but I've been super-busy. At the very beginning of my re-entry into music in 2002 I recorded some covers, but never looked into the legality of making them public, instead opting for the lazy way out - to do all original music. I have recently recorded a couple of covers for the first time in eight years, and have begun looking in to releasing them legally. But again, I'm lazy, so I haven't gotten very far. Anyway, that's my two cents on the originals vs. covers issue.

I would also love to participate in the project - sorry for my late entry. I have stuff in the can - I have some short sketches that I could contribute or longer pieces. Also gotta look into copyrighting my own stuff!

This CD won't be sold. I don't see how it infringes on anyone's copyright. It's not commercial use.

To give you some idea of distribution, I see that there have been 32 downloads of the Pit CD I put up on Mediafire. Add that to the ones mailed out originally and I'm pretty sure the total is under 100.
Title: Re: Outpost CD

This CD won't be sold. I don't see how it infringes on anyone's copyright. It's not commercial use.

I'm not sure that's true. I'm no expert, but in The Indie Band Survival Guide, it states, "When you record a cover song, you need to obtain a mechanical license from the author/publisher and pay the requisite fees... As outlined above, it doesn't matter if a song is given away for free or used as a promo, a copy is a copy, and to avoid an infringement claim, you're supposed to obtain a license." (page 194)

I finally found the section referred to in this quote - it's on page 164, and states, "Recording someone else's song requires a license. This license is needed even if you're just giving the cover song away for free."

Whether someone would ever crack down on the Outpost is another matter, but I think we should be aware that including covers is problematic. I hate to be the bearer of bad news!  :-[

I'm no expert either, but giving away promos is commercial use. That's not what we're doing.

There was music copyrighted by others on the Pit CD. No issue has ever come up.

It's in a partly edited sequence I have stored - should be decent quality, but it's miked (with a condenser mike) about 10 feet in front of a live performance.  I'll give it a listen this weekend.

Sweet! this is heading towards a Dbl CD  ;D  Which is great in my books. In Online version terms its irrelevent I suppose but being generally old school in my attitudes I like the concept of a Dbl Album.

If possible please make your files either wav or aiff. So big (best quality) files are better.

I'm still trying to find time to setup an ftp account on my server for those comfortable using an ftp client.

If you want to post a CD to me I have no problems with that. Just PM me and I will give you my postal address. I would prefer not to put it in the public part of the forum.

I would like to avoid choking up my email server with multiple 30mb files if I can help it so but if its the only way for you to get the file to me then please PM me first.

I'm digging through the video from the last of the gigs I played with my "temp" band last year - mostly original songs and all played fretless on the RD, but I don't want to waste anyones time If I can't get a quality track - Bret's got a couple of mp3's of the PC from the '87 but I feel that that is not relevant to this effort...

I used "dropbox" when Pekka left me recordings a while back - quite easy to use...

No deadline yet mate. I'll play it by ear for now. Once I have a majority of ppls songs I will check with the remainder and see when they can get stuff to me. About this time I will book some time with Scotty to get them mastered.

Title: Re: Outpost CD

Please if possible use the highest quality file regardless of size. The closer you can get to the original recording the better your song will sound.

.wav or .aiff files are preferred. flac is also OK.  A 128kbps mp3 converted to wav or aiff is still only as good as the mp3 file that it was converted from so if the mp3 is the best you have that will have to do.

As is normal when I start a project something always screws up. In this case the power supply unit in my computer has died. I'm waiting for a replacement now.

This means that there are a lot of you who have hidden email addresses on this forum but who's email addresses I have on my home machine which I currently cant access.  I need your email addresses to invite you to the dropbox folder if that is your preferred method of getting your file to me.

If you want to post me a CD then PM me and I will give you my postal address.

Nasty stuff as far as I'm concerned... when it first came over it was a nice drop but since they started brewing in the UK...  :puke:

Fosters was always 4.9% here. When I lived in the UK it was brewed by Courage and was always 3.5%. I could never understand how they could call it the same beer. Tasted quite different. Both crap IMO  ;D

Get yaself a six pack of Coopers Vintage Ale my good man and all will fine with the world. :)

Just keep in mind that some music hosting sites have stronger copyright rules than others. So depending where it gets hosted a cover song may get dropped off of the list.

Title: Re: Outpost CD
Post by: uwe on January 20, 2011, 07:25:51 AM
We're now in the mixing stage, two tracks with backing vocals finished. One of them, "Unity" is probably the more interesting one for bass players as it features two separately recorded bass tracks. Panned to the left you hear a 64 TB II Rev with D'Addario Chromes, panned to the right a fretless medium scale Gibson Super 400 one-off Phil Jones created Custom Shop acoustic bass guitar with a piezo bridge (passive, not active) and the E string tuned to D. Not sure whether we will keep that for most of the song very extreme TB left/Super 400 right panning for the endmix. But the Super 400 emulates a doublebass quite nicely, just listen to the three sliding notes at the end of the song.

Access at www.zentralstudio.de, kundenlogin: raintunes, user name: raintunes and project name: plainingjet.

I listen to this stuff (and Summer's Gone is largely written by me and the singer, so there is no one else to blame) and wonder: "Uwe Hornung, you used to be a fearsome Heavy Metal player with a New Wave edge to your playing, what has become of you?"   This is probably the "poppiest" music I have ever made. That vocal intro (initially a backing vocal elevated to intro status by our producer who liked what he heard) sounds so AOR/Middle of the Road, even, yes, cheesy, it wouldn't be out of place on a Blackmore's Night album!!!  :-[ :-[ :-[

Who spots the In-a-gadda-da-vida riff I play for a few seconds at one point?   My bandmates were dumbfounded, but then they didn't even know who Iron Butterfly was. Ah yes, the generational gap ... I expect you guys to do much better!!!!

zappa bassist scott thunes did that iron butterfly riff on some live recordings back in the seventies. he also would insert the riff from "sunshine of your love" at odd intervals.

Our stuff is now finished, mastered and everything. You can download it directly from the studio's site

www.zentralstudio.de

Go to Kundenlogin, type in "raintunes" as Projektname and again "raintunes" as username and then "plainingjet" as password. Four songs, one of them a cover, you choose whichever one you deem fit. If you want details on what basses were played I can give those to you after you have made your choice.

Title: Re: Outpost CD

Kind of a non story really - didn't miss anything - persistantly lacking in all the guys willing to commit to full rehearsal time and others with too many other musical commitments to make it a viable proposition - 5 months and the most we ever played live at any one time was 5/6 songs... nothing recorded (studio - some live stuff but not worth posting) for you - a bunch of guys willing to turn up for an open-mic but not willing to take it further in a logical fashion - I wasn't going to issue ultimatums so I just quit... excellent lead player... a real shame... I'll e you and you'll get what I mean...

Unfortunately my potential contribution is out of my hands.  While my parts have been laid down, the completion of the album depends on the guy whose album it is finding money to finish laying down the vocal tracks and other finishing touches.  So, I may well miss the deadline for contributing.

Just a bump to let people know that I haven't given up on getting this to happen, I've just been distracted by a few things in my life like my wifes health which is all good now.  Also by the purchase of my company a few months back. This in particular has taken a lot of my time away. To compound issues my mate Scotty who will be doing the mastering in his studio has had his recently ex partner get diagnosed with lymphoma. Due to the care of their sons she has moved back with him during treatment. So his time restrictions are now great as you can imagine.

Life gets complicated sometimes.

If you do have any further songs for me please contact me.

I just uploaded "Stomp," by my band Cab 20, as well as "Come Around" by my other band, Future Shock. The first track is revival rock (think White Stripes, The Hives, The Black Keys, etc.,) and the second track sounds like Alice Cooper does glam rock.

Stomp was recorded with an Epiphone Thunderbird through an Ampeg BA300/115 combo amp, Come Around was recorded with a 2002 Gibson Thunderbird into an Ampeg V4-B through a Mesa Boogie 2x15. I hope everyone likes it.  8)

I've uploaded two songs, both recorded last year with the Richard Madden band.

"Reefer Headed Woman" is the old blues number that was covered by Aerosmith a few years ago.  I'm using my Darkstar P bass into my Ampeg SB-12 fliptop amp (mic'ed).

"Autumn Sun" is an instrumental number, with my Nash P bass direct into an Avalon U5.

are we going for originals only???

Keep in mind that if any cover tunes are included it opens up the whole can of worms of having to get copyright clearance and pay royalties...or the legit copyright holder/publisher can cause problems down the line.

Theoretically, yes. But it's not going to be sold or marketed.

I must apologise most profusely for my lack of attendance on this great forum over the last 6 months and more specifically for starting a project and not finishing it. I've had to admit to myself that I will not be able to pull the Outpost Cd together.
With 2 bands, a wife and 7 year old boy, a govt job and a rapidly expanding business I just cannot see me getting around to finishing it.

My house and yard are not getting desperately required attention either for what its worth.

On the positive side of things my business is doing very well and my family are all healthy so I cant complain.

Thankyou to all those people who have contributed. The song files are still on the Dropbox server and if anyone is interested in doing something further with them then let me know.

Thanks for the effort you have put in already, Bret. You've been conspicuous by your absence, and I just figured your business was keeping you busier than it had been.

Dave, no understatement there mate. Stressful but good.
haha Mark, One thing besides many that I've learned about dog food in the last 18 months is this: Economic down turns play little if any part in weather or not people feed their pets. Regardless of their socio-economic standing. Also that low income ppl buy just as much premium dog food as high income.

Thanks guys  :)

We've been hunting for cheaper bird food (we buy in 20kg sacks as they're hungry buggers) but having lost of fun trying to find anything our daughters bichon will eat at all...!

Doesn't surprise me one bit. Pet market is utterly crisis resistant.

Good for you and a smart move to serve it!
