Gibson Basses / Gene Simmons EB-0 (KISS content)
« on: February 21, 2008, 03:02:29 PM »
Following up on this thread, I found an article on one of the Gibson basses Gene Simmons used in the early years of KISS. I seem to remember there was a bass purporting to have belonged to Mr. Simmons on eBay, and a thread back in the DP2 days? Well, I was throwing out some magazines (recycle of course), and clipped this:

Any thoughts? I have higher resolution scans if anyone is interested, or maybe I can just post them here.

I messed up one of the scans I made yesterday, so I just rescanned it, and will try and email it out to you guys some time today. Also, I think I will start a thread on it in Gibson Basses. Finally, the magazine it comes from is the January 2007 issue of Vintage Guitar.

I've been going through magazines, looking for stuff to throw out, and found an article on an EB-0 played by Gene. Here's a small scan:

I have higher quality (i.e., BIGGER) scans of the entire article - let me know if you want them and I can email them to you (there's 2, as-is they are 3.6 MB - I can shrink them a bit but the text is pretty small).

That solo is pretty groovy. Are those Dimarzio's in his EB2?
That appears to be the consensus. Read more about the ultimate fate of the bass (but no bass swallowing) here.

Hey Chris - thanks for posting - I was waiting for those pics! Plus there were some new ones in there - +2 on the string-licking shot!

I've always been very careful about not leaving cases open when the cats are around. One time we had a party here with the band. When the keyboard player came to pick his gear up next day, he found one of the cats had left a pungent review in his gig bag. Probably complaining about an overlong version of Green Onions, I thought, though the cat wasn't called Booker T.
People talk about the more recent Rickenbacker cases smelling great, but I have one that smells like a combination of vanilla and cat pee. I'm not sure if that's the smell other people are getting, but I don't like it, and to top things off, the bass smells like that too! So I only let my cat in the case with supervision! Here she is in my Starfire case:

$400 for a Kalamazoo? :o The ones on eBay lately still seem to be much less than that, though I haven't really been paying close attention. Maybe vintage chipboard is rising in value. ;)
Yeah, I thought it was expensive, which is why I held off.

And chipboard is a lot heavier than I imagined!  ???

Just noticed that one of the knobs is missing too.

I think it's almost worth it, if you really want a single-mudbucker-bearer. I paid a few hundred less for mine a few years ago in Japan, and really love it, though I haven't been playing it much lately. I found a white Kalamazoo for $400 locally, and that thing was much heavier than I expected! I've been toying with the idea of picking it up for parts (the pickguard is the same as my Melody Maker), but it seems a bit steep for that.

Great (slightly distorted!) solo from Steve Swallow with Gary Burton on the Chick Corea tune "Open Your Eyes, You Can Fly" (near the end):

My personal favorite quote regarding Mac vs. PC:

"Macs are for the stuff you want to do, PC's are for the stuff you have to do."

Nice shot of dUg with the 12er. Actually, lots of nice shots in this thread! Glenn Hughes was always one of my favorites. And of course, Geddy Lee, Jack Bruce, and Paul McCartney.
