The Bass Zone / Re: When is a bass not bass?
« on: January 02, 2015, 10:26:39 AM »
I have no qualms with basses soloing but it does depend on the style of music and whether the solo is done tastefully while also being melodic and serving the greater composition. Milt Hinton, Ray Brown, Slam Stewart, Major Holley, Paul Chambers, Percy Heath and Sam Jones were great soloists and groove masters. Jaco may be a bit much for some but at least he was playing a Fender Jazz. Once the two handed tapping starts, I usually check out.

Merry Christmas folks. It's a nice morning so far in western Mass. Good day for a roast and watching Ben Hur. Peace, love and happiness to you all.

Yikes! Sheryl Crow in her worst nightmares could never be as tasteless and unfunny as Joan Rivers (IMHO of course).

What are you a Mormon Dave? Joan was one of the great comics and a brave outspoken woman who had to use her wits to succeed in chauvinist male dominated industry. Even better, she wasn't afraid to stick her thumb in the face of Emperor in chief Obama. Jerry Lewis rules too.

Ouch, that string action looks painful.
I don't see spike's on the back, so as long as you played finger style, standing up, with your right elbow sort of extended out so you don't get spiked... it should be doable.

I knew it, I'm surrounded by assholes  ;)
Makes me miss Joan Rivers. Now if there was a Joan Rivers bass for sale, that would get my attention. Probably would be a better investment over time than the Sheryl Crow bass too.
May the Schwartz be with you!

Maybe one of Lance's old yellow jerseys ended up stuffed inside the body. That might be worth something  :-\

Nice work Brad. I especially like the bound body effect. How do you like those Lollars? I've got a build about to come in with one of them.

Cool 8 string Carlo. Anything special about the neck to accommodate the extra string tension?

Maybe next year they'll use a White pick guard with a Rosewood fretboard and call it the Brian Wilson sig :P
I don't think there's a natural Standard Precision in the current lineup. They should do one of those and call it the John Deacon sig or a roadworn version called the George Porter Jr. sig.

Not sure about the sig but I'm loving my Epi JC since I picked it up a month ago. The pickup doesn't cry out for replacing to me, but it would be an interesting experiment to see if an original LP sig pickup would make much of an improvement in the JC. It's Jack's assertion that the pickup in the Epi was actually an improvement over the previous Gibson design.
