Not having gotten a Gibson Continental V bugs me to death - every now and then I still google for one, but the same old hits crop up showing it as deleted. Someone somewhere somehow must have gotten one though AND WHY THE HELL HASN'T HE SOLD IT TO ME YET!!!

The inexcruciable pain of it.

Almost all contemporary blues bass players sound the same to me. I'd really want to hear something new. Like someone playing with a pick, for example. Or have a unique style.

ilan.       listen to blues bassists from the 60's and early 70's. you would think those guys would be pretty conservative but many hit the root then head for outer space.

give a listen to early luther allison, junior wells, buddy guy, canned heat, james cotton and even the first couple of butterfield blues band records. these will provide a good cross section of what was going on. then listen to jimmy reed for a lesson in 'minimal minimalism'.

Title: Re: Post a random bass guitar thought...
Post by: Highlander on September 18, 2010, 02:23:38 AM
Exiled... I suspect that doubling the mud would not imporove the fruits of your labour but one in the forward position would be (Grand) funky... ;)

(adding fuel to Droom's pain...)

The last addition to my little herd jumped my collection by 33% (no quibling over fractions please) ...

The next one will only jump the number by 25% ...

If I sneak in a 6th bass (hmm... does a blues band need an 8 string...?) that would be a 20% increase ...

This only goes to prove that more is less... :o

How wierd is that...?

I do a fair amount of bending, play physically harder than most folks, but have never had fret wear problems.  Where do the frets start giving out first?
Title: Re: Post a random bass guitar thought...
Post by: chromium on September 22, 2010, 12:31:15 PM
I thought I had heard the frets on the 4001s will wear faster than other basses when using rounds, but that could be fallacy for all I know.  I know the big issue on that bass is its ability (or inability) to support higher tension strings.  I've got some low-ish tension flats on it at the moment.

When I got it back in the 80s it had Roto rounds on it, and some nice trenches in the frets.  The neck was/is fantastic on it, though, (main reason I chose that particular one) and it still plays great despite the frets.  Part of my motivation for putting the flats on was to stave off the looming need for fretwork... and I guess it worked in the sense that anything I put flats on I stop playing  ;D.  I've tried to like them... really!

My strings of choice these days are the EXL170s (nickel 100s), so I'll probably end up going that route on it.

I always used Rounds on my  '73 4001 - they shredded the frets in no time! Had them re-done twice. I still really regret selling that bass.  :-\

I just played a '66 P-Bass at $4500 and a '73 P-Bass at $2k. Why can't I rationalize that neither played or sounded markedly better than  my 2010 Squier CV P-Bass, my '84 MIJ Squier P-Bass, or either of my SX P-Basses (which cost a little over $100 new)? ???

I'm going through a Heep phase myself right now. Just bought all the Byron stuff from Demons & Wizards onwards to High & Mighty plus the three Lawton albums (Heeps best singer in my opinion) and the three Pete Goalby ones (Heep's second-best singer). Last night I even picked up my brother's classical guitar and played "Free me" on it. But "Stealin'" is a fave too ... three chords (D, C and - yes! - G) can take you a long way ... (Free me in contrast has 7 - Ken Hensley progressed over the years, Lady in Black only had two!)

Heep never had the instrumental Brawn of Purple or Zep, but they had a strong songwriter with Hensley, brought harmony vocals to hard rock and alsways had a nose for good to excellent bass players (Mark Clarke, Gary Thain, John Wetton, Trevor  Bolder, Bob Daisley). Thain's rhythmic and melodic feel was beautiful, he really blossomed with Heep and his bass was always high in the mix. As it was with all Heep bassists, Mick Box (Heep guitarist)  is a selfless man. Anybody wishing to see a (mainly) rhythm guitarist with a (mainly) lead bassist work out in the context of real songs is recommended to watch today's Heep incarnation: It's a sight to behold as Bolder is moving across the whole neck with dexterity and a real rock feel while Box is laying the foundation via bar chords. It works.

Which one is that? I'm on Blackberry due to a Denmark vacation and can't access youtube. Is it the one where Trevor Bolder plays badass lead bass or the Ken Hensley re-arrangement a few years back?

Yes, there is an F in the intro but it only happens once in the whole song! And Thain compensates for it by holding on steadfast to the D in the intro where the keyboards and vocals play/sing to C and G. I've heard that intro played by Wetton, Daisley and Bolder, all three great bassists, but none of them has the same inimitable subtle shuffle feel Thain has on that track.

I have asked that. My wife likes to point out that none of her shoes cost what I usually spend on any given bass. I hate it when she makes a good point.

Yes, there is an F in the intro but it only happens once in the whole song!

Twice. It's in the bridge before the lead also.

True. Twice. I'm shattered. I just listen too often to just the intro up to "... but my life!".

By the way: Thanks to American puritans, this song did not become the hit it should have because it was banned with many radio stations for the "I done the ranchers daughter ...". When Heep heard that that line was an issue, they wanted to rerecord the vocals, but being on tour in the US didn't find the time.

Actually a nice lead by Mick Box tho, simple and melodic, I've always liked it a lot.

Has Mick Box ever played anything that is not simple and melodic? Ok, let's close our eyes on that extended guitar solo on Magician's Birthday which sounded like Blackmore's roadie testing his master's Marshalls. Mick is best when he sticks to melodic and simple, he's no improviser.

I dunno, even back then I thought he was a touch to Liberace for an otherwise totally unglam band such as Heep. I thought Hensley looked cool - bird of prey nose and hair to his ass. And Thain looked just like the heroin junkie he was.

Byron and Wetton are supposed to have gotten along famously well ... I wonder if that had to do with the vice they shared (Byron died inter alia of a fatty liver, unlike Wetton he never got off the drink).

Good one! ha ha

I've got the framework together for a new instrumental composed BASS-ically of 3 riffs like my TigerShark track MegaYang Mindbender Riffage.
Like the 3rd riff in MegaYang, the 3rd riff in the as yet untitled new one is composed of 26 notes.
I'm developing my own style!
The first riff of the new boogie is very Tull-esque & the 2nd riff is very YES style.
The core of the piece wil be PURE TigerShark tho!!!
Then back to the YES riff & the Tull riff will end it. It's a 4-5 & it's reminiscent of Living In The Past, appropriately...that's something you do more often in your 50s I'm finding out.  :-\

The wooden pg is definitely a keeper and it was very nicely done. I went with a white pg though so there would be some contrast on the bass. Next I want to replace that fugly black spacer behind the jack.

Billy Joe Winghead incorporates a theramin in their shows and it's usually pretty cool!

Roxy Music is another band that never had a bass player as a member proper, yet always inventive bass lines upfront in the mix. As if they were trying to over-compensate for their embarrassing lack of a bass player in their ranks. Apparently, all the myriad Roxy bass players had the freedom to play what they wanted. John Gustafson, who played on Stranded, Country Life and Siren, even had an offer to join (and refused, silly boy!).

I call this one Ear Candy cuz the Main Riff is the chewy center & the other style riffs are just coatings. :D

I wanna post a thought, but if I have to strain to come up with anything remotely relevant is it then really a random bass thought? I must just want the distraction from other things in my life of posting here where its safe I guess.

Outcome!  :)   =  I wish my BaCHbird was back from the shop so I could play it.

Whatcha having done to it?

Whatcha having done to it?

Mine is the Dark Honeyburst (is that just another description of Tobacco burst?)

Belly cut, White nut, Black Headstock, Gotoh Res-O-Lite "Reverse Wind" vintage style tuners and a few other little things *edit* like Gold hat knobs, Switchcraft jack, I have some CTS 500k pots but I'm going to try a set of Gotoh pots that I bought with the tuners. :). I could also try the set of Gibson 300k pots if I get curious enough. I will be buying a pair of Lull pups down the track. Pick guard is already done. Although I can now see that I will need a new one when I put the Lulls in due to the rounded corners.

Could be a while Ken. I've told Brian to put it on slow burn. I still need to get some photo's of original NR's to him. I'm missing it already. The Lulls will have to sound great because I'm already very impressed with the Artecs.

  8) I'd say hang on tight Bret, they blow Artecs away - I'll be swapping out the Gibsons in my '89 later this year with Lulls.

 All a matter of preference............

But a bass with un-notched saddles doesn't work well for me, I play way too hard! - So the Orville made the trip to Mike Lull's on Friday to get some notches filed.

if you play an obvious wrong note repeat it several times. people will think you are playing 'outside' and applaud your innovative style.

My playing style would likely make most guys cringe.......It's a furious downstroke assualt on the strings with the pick often hitting the rear pickup,  I break E's and A's on a regular basis. I recall one night that was the first show I played on a new set of DR's on my black  '77 'Bird - they were dead shot after 3 hours and they went into the trash. It's bad form, probably bad for my arm muscles too but it get the job done.

If my pinkie were a little longer..................I'd need an Opti-Grab  ;D

Here I'm beating up on my '76.....

Do you recognize this?
You have always kept some parts of an old radio, tapedeck, or whatever, in a shoe box.
You've decided to throw them away because haven't needed any of them in more than 25 years.
A week later you find out you need something, and you're sure you had it in that shoe box.
That sucks.
Very bad.

I'm never throwing stuff away again.
Or should I say, none of my stuff

That's me.  I recently pulled out a couple of stereo mounting brackets that came with a Muntz 8-track and fabricated a mount from them.

A moment's reflection will suffice to tell you how long THOSE have been kicking around in one of my toolboxes.

Ah, I hadn't thought of Mad Man Muntz in years. I thought he only made 4-tracks though. Just how many business failures did he have?

I grew up on four acres in the country - we had a garage with two bays, a shop with another bay next to that, and a separate 150' x 50' building which was originally a chicken operation but which we cleaned out and turned into car & boat storage.  One whole end of that outbuilding had 2x12's on concrete blocks with car parts - Ford flathead, Pontiac 389, Studebaker straight six and Fiat 1100/1200 series.

In back of the outbuilding, for parts we had a 1950 Studebaker hardtop (thoroughly rusted and not worth much), a couple of Oldsmobiles, a 1959 Fiat 1200 sedan, and about four late 50's Mercedes 200-series sedans.  They all were hauled off and recycled - fortunately we knew the guy in our county who did that - an old family friend.

In addition, we had a couple of spare engines in the garage we had pulled out of various cars, and my dad was a great woodworker who had quite a bit of lumber and materials stored.  He had two vertical storage units about 6' x 4' that had shelves every 8 inches or so to hold nails, screws, and all other kinds of fasteners.  LOTS of hardware.

In 1996 when my parents had to move from the country to town, FIRST the four kids took everything of theirs and that they wanted, THEN a group of students and friends of dad's loaded up four big horse trailers and moved them, THEN we had an auction company come in and held a two-day auction.

We gotcha pack rat right cheer!
