The Bass Zone / Lev Weksler
« on: September 13, 2018, 07:45:43 AM »
Just found this guy and I absolutely love his tone and playing. He plays a fast flute part (the Badinerie) and makes it look so effortless. Never heard anyone else attempting this flute solo on upright.

Yeah, it's classical, it's upright bass, but give it 3 minutes of your time, you're going to like it.

Gibson Basses / Black EB2 with LP Custom appointments
« on: September 09, 2018, 12:04:15 PM »

Mark Agnesi from Norman's Rare Guitars just tweeted and posted this to Instagram: "Going through old pictures this week I stumbled across this Factory Black, EB-2 Bass with 355/LP Custom appointments, custom made plaque and green floral pickguard.  Probably the raddest bass I have ever seen. Wonder where it is now."

Anyone here knows anything about it?

Guitars Etc. / Do people in Germany play jazz guitar backwards?
« on: August 11, 2018, 02:11:27 AM »
Here are 8 vintage German-made arch-tops, by Aschado, Migma, Klira, Framus (3), Herrnsdorf, and Höfner. Why on earth are the pickguards reversed?

Other Bass Brands / Just sold my '64 Gretsch

Sad to see her go, but for the last 4-5 years she had seen maybe 2-3 hours of play. A guy came that knew all about this model and was really enthusiastic about finding one. So I sold it to him for $2,600.

Money I get from selling a bass has always gone to buying another one, but funny thing, I can't think of a bass I particularly want now that I don't already have. No GAS is new to me. Well, tomorrow is another day.

Anyone knows anything about this German maker? This one looks really nice. What's a good price in your opinion?

Bass #16...

My youngest son (15.5) was a jazz pianist until last year he switched to guitar and bass. He's self-taught, his background was more than sufficient for that, and he plays really well. He started on my short-scale '78 Fender Musicmaster, until he wanted to upgrade. He tried everything, and asked for a MM Stingray. I found this on eBay - bought for $818, and free shipping is significant (I'm located in Israel, shipping a bass is typically $150).

It arrived on Thursday. Really superb bass, fresh set of strings, Ishibashi had it perfectly set-up before shipping, ridiculously low action and still no fret buzz. The kid was ecstatic.

Other Bass Brands / Godin Dorchester bass
« on: May 11, 2018, 12:26:25 AM »
I saw this short-scale Godin Dorchester bass in a local music shop yesterday. It's like a Ric-meets-Mosrite. Rickenbacker style chambered body with flat bound back and German carve on the front, Mosrite upside-down look, Epi Newport pickguard, and P90-like pickups. And of course the Fender lever switch because we have to have something Fender. I didn't like it - not a solid body, not a hollow body. Did anybody else here try these?
