Looks like Gillan has a lot more hair than he had when I met him 8 years ago. Plugs, maybe?

Mine are 34 in scale [...] it’s perfectly balanced.

I think I figured out how this is possible. The vintage SB-5A (medium scale) has a total length of 115.5 cm, that's 1 cm LONGER than the 114.5 cm SBV500 with its long scale neck. For the new models the moved the bridge back, and the result is a better balanced bass with a 34" scale length. Win-win. That's good design.

Nice! Any neck dive? Mine is a 1967, medium scale, I wouldn't call it a neck diver but it's not perfectly balanced so I'm using a counterweight at the body end. Yours is a long scale.

Is it unethical to want to track down a vintage toaster and make it a 4001S?

I wouldn't. Most 4000's were routed for a neck pickup, and those are absolutely fine to convert, preferably keeping the original pickguard and harness intact and using a reisuue guard. But please don't take a dremel to a mint 1967 bass.

'76 4001 FL "Walnut" I just saw posted on FB. This is sooooo much nicer than their FG, imho.

Holy cow. July 1967 4000 MG, mint. $18,495 BIN

Crazy rare and drop-dead gorgeous. Neck-thru and no neck pickup rout. Take my kidney and send me this one.

1998 4003S/5 WHT/BT.  $5,639 BIN

From Japan. Strung EADGC so possibly had less tension on the neck than other S/5's. Original pickup included. Some stand-related discoloration but looks to be in great condition.

Fender Basses / Re: Antigua is back

The cheese-yellow-green tones all come from the clear coat yellowing, potentially. This would make the Squier finish an aged Antigua rather than exactly what rolled off the production line?

Fender have applied Antigua as a NOS some years ago. A friend of mine got a Strat, I thought it looked incorrect. We perceive Antigua in its lightly aged form.

Some 70s Antiguas didn't have lacquered guards, so the only body shows yellowing.

Prince could also buy a Greco or a Squier or even a 70's Fender, and still he stuck to his H.S. Anderson Tele. I really have no idea, having never played one. I just thought it was cool that this H.S. Anderson guy built basses with the same signature look.

Even if this was a Sadowsky grade bass and I liked the look, 11lbs. would be a deal breaker for me.

Squier Antigua P-bass ($418), Bass VI ($454), Strat and Tele Custom available for preorder at European retailers.

Yeah, it's pukeburst, it looks like your granny's cooker or fridge, but it grows on me.

To me personally, '68-70 EB-0/3 have the sweetest necks ever...obviously, YMMV.

My '70 slothead EB-0L's neck perfectly fits this description.

Delusional parasitosis is the clinial term.

In Arabic the informal term for withdrawal syndrome is "duda" — literally, worms.
