Gibson Basses / Re: Epi Explorer - or- Fenderbird?

Tom, did you say you needed to sell the Fenderbird?

And congratulations on the Explorer, I think you'll really like how it plays........A modern Thunderbird in pointy clothes  ;)

Not exactly. More like I "feel like" I should sell the F-bird. I don't know. I know I'm not going to use the Explorer a lot. Or will I? Either way... I've come to accept that I am a little bit of a "collector", and don't necessarily need to play something all the time to justify having it. They really are money in the bank if you buy wisely. Right???  :P

Well, I let the Epi go... And went ahead and bought a Gibson faded tobacco! $899 at Musicians Friend, and I got a 15% off promo code for a total of $765 shipped to my office! This is going to be fun.  ;D

Rush, DP, King, Chic, Heart.  ;D

Probably the best set of choices I've seen, though I haven't ever paid that much attention. Would have gone for Kraftwerk too, but only 5 per voter...

Cool, thanks for the input! Maybe I should try to find one of those faded/worn - whatever they call it - tobacco burst Gibsons...

Boy, you never know what you'll find here at the Outpost! White Punks.... has a Bowie - Cracked Actor feel.

Arrows - never heard of them. Hope they kept their publishing rights! I knew JJ didn't write it, but I never looked into who did. I think I assumed it was a Chapman/Chinn song. I like this version.

Interesting. Have you played the Epi Explorer, or is that based on their T-bird necks? I know those are chunky, and "uninviting" to me. The Mighty Mite Jazz neck on my 'bird is nice, as far as F style necks are concerned.  ;)

Torn.... Been jonesing for an Explorer for some time now. I love the look of the Epi "korina" models. I also really like the pickup placement - very similar to a Ric. I would drop in a pair of black plastic TB+... But... It wouldn't really do anything that my Fenderbird doesn't do already, though it may end up being more comfortable. The 'bird is heavy, and the way it hangs puts the neck at an angle I'm not used to compared to any of my other basses. But it looks incredible, and sounds GREAT!

Back to the Explorer - there's one on the 'bay - http://www.ebay.com/itm/170918883925?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT The guy accepted my offer of $480, INCLUDING shipping. Now I'm not sure about pulling the trigger. I feel like I'd have to sell the 'bird, but I have a special attachment to that bass having put it together myself in honor of JAE. I actually completed it on the 5 year anniversary of his death. And John, if I do, I'll certainly throw you some coin for the body.  :)

Thoughts???

"Jeremy" by Pearl Jam perhaps?

+1 even though I can't stand Pearl Jam!

I was tempted to bid, and I don't play 5 strings OR non-revs! Great looking bass.

They were something different. Bowie method acting to be "just a band member". I liked Reeves G.' gutar style, somewhere between Yardbirds and Adrian Belew. And the Sales brothers did the most head-scratching "now we're leaving the meter, now we're back in" breaks I have ever had the pleasure to hear. Sibling telepathy.

Big Tin Machine fan here! And Bowie in general is an overall favorite of mine.

The smaller body may help sales. The ES-33x series/EB-2 look in a more compact size might be more appealing.

Better than making the Les Paul BIGGER! Some bean counter probably wanted to get more mileage out of the Buckethead program in their CNC.  :P

My only experience with "spiky" fret ends has been on my Fenderbird's Korean Mighty Mite all maple neck. Every winter... I bought a nice fret file from StewMac last year, and of course we ended up with a mild winter and no shrinkage. Not complaining, but I had hoped to file them down the next time they started sticking out.

Tony Levin had one made by MM quite some time ago. It has since been destroyed in a fire.
