I bought this neck to go on my LP Triumph body but it doesn't look like it will fit but it will be perfect for my 8 string NR I am building !(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v102/godofthunder59/NR8string003.jpg)(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v102/godofthunder59/NR8string001.jpg)

Cool idea! You better hurry, Joe's working on his too!!!
-
That's gonna be a sweet bird! I love that headstock on a Thunderbird.
-
It was Joe's idea that I snag one of these for the 8 string, I bought it for the Triumph body.

So far on my Korina NR Thunderbird II 8 string bass, I have my ebony fingerboard glued on, the neck slot and pickup route done at work on the CNC machine, headstock tuner holes drilled and am waiting for my new tech to route the control cavity, install the frets and dots and put it together. I asked if he could get it done by August. After it's together, I'll play it, test it out...then dismantle it for a few coats of Original Gibson Valspar yellow tinted Nitro clear. I have a black/white/black pickguard .60 from Chandler (Scott, I'll need to speak with you about a mod on my pickguard) and one NOS 90's Gibson Orville chrome (almost 10K). Dr. Bassman got me a T Bird blank tailpiece that i am going to mill 8 slots in (soon as i figure out the dimensions) to go with my Hamer 8 string bridge, and schaller tuners. Should look like an old Korina Explorer or flying V when it's finished. Scott...Yours will be kick ass but make sure you put a t bird pickup and an 8 string bridge that has a bridge and separate tailpiece for ULTIMATE sustain.
-
As an FYI I used sheet rock mud to fill grain in my Moderne. That is how I was able to dye the mud yellow to imitate the Korina color using Maho. Sounds like an awesome project.M

I have a Lindy Fralin Bassbucker that I am going to use for now, it will be routed for a Thunderbird pup under the guard. Color ? Pelham blue. My last name in mop script on the headstock.

I've heard of that being done. I needed black filler, Stickley repro piece, and bought the dark filler and tinted with black artist oil paint - looked liked 90 year old black paste wax. The filler wasn't cheap and the paint was about $5 a tube - you method was most likely a lot cheaper.
-
what about one of those Mike Lull bird pickups????????

what about one of those Mike Lull bird pickups????????
No gots 300 bucks right now ! The Lindy is in the parts box !

Just a note for those who missed it, we had a thread last fall about pore filling with drywall compound, along with Robbie O'Brien's video: http://bassoutpost.com/index.php?topic=1344.0
-
Good one Dave, I was just thinking about it when Mike mentioned it on his Moderne project. A good method for sure.
-
..... and very easy to sand!!!!
-
I'm gonna try it sometime too on a future project.
-
Well, I saw my Korina 8 string today. The neck is glued on. My new repair/luthier guy Geoff Benge guy is going to start doing the frets, nut, control cavity and assemble it!!!! But the only pics I have are on my phone!!!!!
-
That's ok Joe... just send out to everyone...! ;D
-
I'm going there Monday and take some shots. Will post pics.
-
okay, Here's a pic. More to come soon!
-
Joe, that looks awesome!! I'd love to get the 8 string headstock template from you. ;)
-
Looking good!!!
-
Nice !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
Sorry, Got backed up this week. Will try to get some pics. Ass for the headstock template, email me at jswoquinn@sbcglobal.net. It was traced originally from a 1978 Hamer B8S headstock, the ones with the big V shape.
-
Can't upload the pics but the frets are in the bass today!!!!! That leaves the control cavity to be routed, bridge and tailpiece installed and wired up. Then we'll see how it RAWKS!!!
-
I can see it now, band mates standing around waiting for Scott to tune his bass again......

I doubt it will be a problem as it is I have the most gear and am the first one set up tuned 4-5 basses in the stand and ready to go while everyone else is dinking around. ;D (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v102/godofthunder59/Charwithmytbird002.jpg)

LMAO Nice touch the Cralola box

Just stopped in to Geoff Benge's repair shop today and look what was hanging on the wall!!!!!!! Man...It's even better sounding than my Tahiti Coral 2 pickup NR Mahogany 8 string. It's lighter. Just a few little things left to do. Install the fret dots, input jack and shave the neck down a bit. then, i install the veneer with inlay in the headstock and paint it yellowed nitro clear!!!! This will sound KILLER with my Band, THE TREESHAKERS!!!!!
-
Gibson REALLY should have made this.
-
Bout 98% finished.
-
I said it elsewhere too but I have to say it again, that's one hell of a bass! Good job. I can't wait to see pics when it's done!
-
THANKS, George!!! I was just blown away Friday when I stopped in to the shop to check up on it. With that gibson neck from Great dealz and the Orville T Bird pickup...AND let's not forget the KORINA...it absolutely KILLS!!!! The neck surprisingly has to be shaved down a little. VERY straight. I'll post more pics as soon as more progress comes along.
-
Kewl! Congrats.
-
looks fantastic. Amber/nitro will look sweet on it.
-
I just bought a key piece for my NR 8 string. Joe had a 8 string tail piece up on the bay so I snagged that. Thanks Joe ! pics soon. I am just about ready to cut the neck joint, I just need to get a disc sander so I can get the neck joint angle right.
-
......I just need to get a disc sander so I can get the neck joint angle right.
??? You've got my curiosity up - can you explain how/where you'll use the sander? On the neck tenon?
-
The heal on the body my angle is off a bit maybe 2 degrees, a few seconds on the disc sander will take care of that, I could do it by hand but the disc sander is soooooooooooooooo much easier.
-
I tried a new Hagstrom 8-string and I love it. I won't use it much, so I better spend my money on something else, but it's so cool!
-
Teasing Chris... where's the pics...
-
We reviewed it for the next issue of De Bassist. I'll post some pics as soon as it's out!
But this Bird looks much better!! I always loved the nonrev 12-string of Pete Townshend and this is the bass version! I saw Pete's baby brother play it live with The Who.
Most 8-strings are from top to bottom thin string --> fat string. In that case you can better play with a pick. I play fingerstyle only so I would love to see the strings the other way around like on some Rickenbacker 8-strings.
-
Something a luthier could fix lickety-splitly... ;D
-
I had some spare time today and routed the neck pocket. I won't set the neck till I drill the tuner holes, glue the fingerboard etc.(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v102/godofthunder59/8stringNRneckpocket003.jpg)
-
That's going to be nice!
-
That's got a familiar ( and beautiful) look to it!
-
Lookin' good, Scott!
-
That is very cool! I love multi-coursed basses and I can't wait to see the finished project. Phelham blue rocks!
-
I was wondering where this Birdie had lain up for the winter...
Looking good... 8)

NICE SCOTT!!!! NICE!!!!! glad that Tailpiece I made at work will go to good use. I decided to go with the hamer however, I realized that I either need to make a space for the tailpiece of make another one. One thing...Because the amount of wood at the heel of the neck is about 1/4", the fingerboard will be higher, like an RD bass. Like Mine. A thunderbird has the finger board laying right above the body so the strings are closer to the body. The strings on an RD are higher as is my korina 8 string, which..I will show in a week or so after I get it set up. Just received my Black NR pickguard from Scott today. Nice job, Scott!!! And Nice job on the 8!!!!!
-
No major progress yet just laying out parts, measure measure measure ! Over the weekend I am going to route the pickup cavity and maybe redo the radius on the body. Right now the radius is 1/4" I am thinking of taking it up to 3/8". My '69 has hardly any radius at all while other NRs have something close to 3/8. The bass is now on my work bench, a good sign ! It now has my full attention. ;) Pickup cover off to Seymour Duncan and I am ordering a fingerboard today :) (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v102/godofthunder59/8stringNR001.jpg)(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v102/godofthunder59/8stringNR002.jpg) This is the color I am thinking of going with ;D(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v102/godofthunder59/dodgechallengerplumcrazy.jpg)
-
Plum Crazy man!
-
Great color. Nice job.
-
That's gonna look killer.
