Other Bass Brands / Jackson Kellybird review
« on: January 27, 2019, 04:10:02 AM »
About a year ago I bought this budget model Jackson Kellybird off Reverb for $189 shipped.  I have to say I am pretty impressed. I do misspeak in one section,  there is only one tone control. I have been putting up bass reviews on YouTube I'd appreciate it if you guys stop by and leave some comments.

Gibson Basses / Epiphone Vintage Pro mini review
« on: December 04, 2017, 02:20:18 PM »
My Vintage Pro arrived yesterday only to be greated with a raised eyebrow from the missus.
I am very impressed with this bass, it really sounds like a 60's Thunderbird! I'll write some more thoughts later but for now this will have to do.

Other Bass Brands / '59 Multivox Marvel it's alive!
« on: February 15, 2017, 11:21:55 AM »
I  finally got the Marvel on the bench and it was a real simple fix. The hot on the pickup lead had grounded out due to deteriorated insulation.  Really cool sounding bass with old school thump. It even intonates pretty good. No adjustable truss rod if any. The action is a bit high for me but a upright player picking up this bass in the late 50s would find it perfectly acceptable. I'll post a demo video.

Bill's Shop: Projects, Mods & Repairs / 69 Precision body build
« on: November 26, 2016, 01:41:05 PM »
I bought this off ebay. Back in my formative years stripped natural 60's P basses were all over the place. I am going to do a Randy Jo Hobbs/Greg Ridley build with this. Hope it's the real deal, looked right to me.

Oy not only do I have four of these basses plus a never built body this followed me home from ebay several months ago, I couldn't pass it up. Now I have two Klira builds on my hands! I need to retire so I can get to this stuff!

As most of you guys know I went out on a limb buying a original Cardinal red NR Thunderbird II with a headstock repair. Always a leap of faith lol. The bass came with lower gauge strings the E is maybe .100 this made me go hmmmmm. I strung the bass up with my standard gauge Roto Sounds .45-.105 and sure enough the hairline crack opened up, a little paint flaking off in the process. I took off the Rotos and put the lighter gauge strings on and decided to think about how to approach this. Less is always more in these cases, it didn't seem like the entire repair had failed so I gently opened up the crack and pumped in as much Tite Bond as I could and clamped it up. I strung it up with the lighter strings and it seems to be doing fine. I'll play it and test it in travel and playing to see if it opens up, then go to the Rotos, if it handles the Rotos I'll touch it up. Patience grasshoppper , patience. Sorry no before or during the process pic. But here is what it looks like now.

The Bass Zone / New gig subbing for Lou Gramm's bass player
« on: July 20, 2016, 02:35:55 AM »
My long time friend AD Zimmer is the bassist for the Lou Gramm band. They were in a bit of a bind for a show and AD asked me to fill in late last week. I am really excited and have been working my tail off. We drive up to Canada on Friday  for show number 1, AD does that one, then me and the band fly up to Sascatuwan for the gig on Monday. Full report to follow!

I  have a touring pro's Epi Blackbird in the shop for a setup and solve a ground issue. The ground wire coming from the bridge looks like it was never soldered. I grounded it to the toggle switch and no hum comes from touching the bridge but I do get a faint hum when I touch the toggle switch. Anyone got a wiring diagram?
