No idea why they would call it the V-bass. Not a Flying V, no relation to the Basses IV and V from the late 80s.

I suspect it's because they're bonkers.

Gibson Basses / Re: Is Henry listening to Gibson fans?

Listening to the voices in his head, it seems.

Also the article pee'd me off a little: "Getting the tuning correct every time you pick up a guitar is a serious barrier to entry for those just getting started"

In the wider context of guitar playing (and without wishing to seem overly élitist) is chopping people off at the door who can't even be bothered to learn how to tune a guitar properly such a bad thing?

Gibson Basses / Re: So, is the EB (2013-14) officially discontinued?

You didn't need to kick the living sh*t out of the point I was making, people.  Some of us happen to enjoy our Victories - it's my go-to recording bass, I'll tell you that for nothing.

Leaving aside people being less delicate than me about it, my point is that something that wasn't held in high regard by its parent company was allowed to live for 5 years - what the hell does that say about the EB?  I quite liked mine.

Gibson do a year of unprecedented affordability then follow it up thinking they're some sort of boutique builder?  The "V"?  That's just stupid.  But what do I know?  I'm only one of the suckers who keeps buying their stuff.

Gibson Basses / Re: EB-13 knob removal
« on: June 05, 2015, 05:38:38 PM »
I use some leftover nylon cord from upholstery work for removing stubborn knobs.  You can probably find something suitable at a hardware store, craft store, etc.  I just slide a length of it under the skirt of the knob and use it to carefully leverage the knob up.

If it is truly glued on (shame on them), careful application of a heat gun may help to soften the adhesive enough for it to give way.

Last time I had work done on my EB before I sold it, my tech had to replace one of the push/pull pots because it fell apart when he had the audacity to try to remove one of the knobs.  I also know that it happened to one of my friends who had a red 2014 EB and they tried to remove the knobs to get the pickguard plastic peeled off.  Pulled the shaft right out of the pot.

Stock levels dwindling, no sign of it in the 2015 lineup, is it officially the end of the road for the EB after only 2 years?  Too soon!  The Victory struggled on for 5! ;)

Simply stunning!  I love the red/black color scheme.

I am curious, though, as to what's going on with the A string?  Missing rear ferrule?

Nothing so intricate (or annoying) thankfully - simply it's a regular length set of Hartke strings and the A string doesn't have quite the length to go through the body and have enough for a full turn on the tuner capstan on a 2+2 headstock so it's of a mind to slip.  Didn't want to take any chances at the gig so top loaded it for safety.  Will get a super long set of d'Addarios probably, that's what I got for my RD.

Thanks for all the kind words, folks.

I pointed a proper camera at the Ripper tonight (my trusty old Canon Powershot A40 - 2MP, 13 years old!) and took some no flash shots.  No tripod, so they're slightly blurry but I feel these far more accurately reflect the colour of the finish.

Well, it's finally (just about) finished.  My mate Rich had to take some time out from all his projects for various reasons but he's recently got back in the saddle and last night we put everything together for the first time.  Please excuse the lousy phone camera pics (really doesn't understand that deep cherry red very well).

Risky, given that we have no idea how long it's been since the neck had any string tension applied to it, but I'm hoping to play it tonight at a gig :)

Very happy with how it's turned out.  Delighted with how it sounds.  Couple of minor things to sort out.  For instance, I think I got the wrong taper for the midrange/tone pots - most of their effect is concentrated in the last 20% of the turn, so I might replace them.  Minor cosmetic issue of the selector switch plate to be addressed in the fullness of time.  But it's done, and back together for the first time in who knows how long.  From a rather sorry looking hunk of wood painted in washed out red to this.  Really happy :)

Umm, if I want a modern looking Gibson bass I'd rather buy an Epiphone Toby Deluxe 4 and stick a better preamp in it.  And not because it's like a twentieth of the price (although that helps).  Sorry folks, it's not my cup o tea.

Cool, it's been ages since I've seen a lolworthy listing from that guy.  Awesome :)

It sounds like everyone's tying themselves in knots.  I can sympathise - I have unnecessarily complicated many things in my life, I get fixated upon something superfluous which is actually not super relevant to solving the problem and I'm no use to anyone until I finally see that I'm being an idiot :)

Gibson Basses / Re: RD Artist- Worth it?

Go for it.  Apart from the obvious finish stuff, the only other thing that stuck out to me is that the 5-0-5 knobs are missing and replaced with normal 0-10 numbered ones.

The advice about the multipole three way doesn't apply in this case - this is a post '79 model with the two mini switches instead of the single three way for controlling the Moog stuff.  Of course, the pickup selector is still the old school switch, so that might still be buggy.

I love my RD, and I'm sure you'll love yours :)

Gibson Basses / Re: Reproduction NR Thunderbirds
« on: February 13, 2015, 05:04:24 AM »
Gibson didn't claim the recent NR was a faithful reissue, but was originally supposed to be. The whole thing started with Scott and Doc talking to the Gibson rep for House of Guitars in Rochester. IIRC he provided Gibson with all the necessary information to do it right, but they wouldn't do it. So I understand the frustration.

Did Gibson agree to do it "right" and then renege?

Simplified but true. But there are some folks who would like to see a vintage spec Thunderbird. I'll buy one of Scott's birds if I can afford it.

So if it's true, then why are people griping about Gibson's failed reissue when it wasn't a reissue in the proper sense of the word and was never intended to be, nay neither billed as such? Don't like it, do something about it. Someone's doing something about it. Case closed? The whining about it is getting pretty old. There are plenty real Gibson problems to complain about without inventing spurious new ones because one's esoteric tastes weren't catered for to one's liking.
