Gibson Basses / Re: NAMM update from Chris (Embassy and Tbird content)

Nice!  I think I would have preferred the 4 in line batwing headstock on the Embassy, but nice to see Epiphone doing some (more) cool stuff :)

Santa brought me my copy on Christmas Day.  Very droolworthy, lovely photography, loving it!

Hint was dropped with "Santa", hopefully an order will have been placed ;)

Is it really worth all the money and labour?
Thunderbirds aren't that rare. I'd wait for a better project to come along.

It's never worth the money, that's for sure.  Nor is it worth the labour, assuming you're looking at labour expressed as time, even at minimum wage.  But it's worth it for the sense of accomplishment and the sheer empowerment of "I did that!".  I have restored from basket cases a Victory and a Ripper and neither will ever make a profit if sold, but that wasn't the point for me.  It was the enjoyment of bringing poor, abused instruments back to something approaching their former glory.

If I wasn't a little tight for cash right now I'd have considered taking this project on.

Gibson Basses / Re: Frightening new Gibson Basses

I can see it listed in online stores, but it's not even on the Gibson website yet?  Do they wait until it's physically sent to the shops before they acknowledge that it's part of the product range?

For my part, it's difficult to get excited about it - it's ... OK.  It just doesn't make me go "phwoaaar, must have one of those".  Wait and see - it took 2 iterations of the EB (2013-14) for me to get one (but that was aesthetics - boring colours and tort, ugh.  Gold and black - hell yeah!).  It's pretty keenly priced for a USA made bass, I suppose - but if I indulge at all it'll be when they turn up second hand or in a fire sale once Gibson do their usual and discontinue it within an attosecond of it being released because it didn't outsell Fender.  Again.  If I buy it new as soon as it's available I think it would be the same as setting fire to £400.

Still made in Korea as of 2015 (FWIW - does it even matter any more?) - and yes, the Blue Royale is lush and not anything like the stock photography.

Look how sparkly it is!  Last one taken with no flash - in reality it hovers between the two extremes.

Did I miss something - where/how does one order these?  I'm not in any dire need, but I looked around the facebook page when this thread started and nothing jumped out at me.  If it is/was still in preprod then nevermind, just wanted to let you know it's not very visible.

I was going to ask the same thing :)

If it can get down lower than the original 3 pointer then I may well be tempted to try one (minus the tailpiece) on my Ripper - the three pointer is pretty much on the deck but I think I would still like it a bit lower yet.

Gibson Chairman and CEO Henry Juszkiewicz said. "While we experienced a soft reception to our 2015 products, we have since introduced our improved 2016 product line that is performing extremely well both in sales to retailers and sell through to consumers globally. We feel we are on an upward trend, poised for an excellent year and are confident of the future."

Look at the earlier posts in this thread.

I have, and sorry if I missed it but I didn't see any before/after discussions which went into any depth.  I did listen to the video of the pickups themselves (which sounded great indeed).

This thread has piqued my interest.  Not so much from the chromey angle, but from a sound angle.  Can someone please compare/contrast the sound of these pickups versus the standard black TB+ pickups found in modern T-birds?

I thought it was 5 ply BWBWB - that's what I put on my restored Ripper - not period correct for a 1975 but I don't really like single ply guards.

Reported it twice now.  eBay just don't give a monkey's, do they?

Stick to the three way toggle, it makes much better sense. The original rotary thingy doesn't offer an "unmolested neck pup by itself"-mode and that is one of the best sounds available from the Ripper. All those filtered extra sounds are not practical in band usage.

Nothing stopping you wiring a 4 way rotary to give that option, I did it on mine.  That way I get the two best (IMHO) sounds - neck soloed and both in series, in phase.

Oh man, I wanna go back to Scotland so bad... what a beautiful country. I never got up north, only Edinburgh, Glasgow, and the Isle of Arran.

The difference in regional accent between Edinburgh and Glasgow was surprising to my American ears: Edinburgh sounded like American English with a few odd vowels thrown in;  Glasgow ... everyone I met seemed so friendly, but I was constantly embarrassed by not understanding a word anyone said!

Try the Doric up in NE Scotland for size sometime - twenty different words for tractor and fifty different words for drunk ;)
