I once owned a 1966 EBO that had an unusual cats eye? (curly) mahogany. A friend of mine has a 1967 EBO with a similar wood grain. This seems like it was concidered undesireable, since it was only on the cheapest instruments with the SG body style.

Could be that straight grain was considered more desirable for structural reasons.

Yeah, that could be the case. Take spalted maple. Just rotten wood, but very desirable at this moment.

Thats pretty cool. Curly honduran mahogany is pretty rare & usually only sold as a laminate.

That spalted stuff is very much "love it or hate it".  It either appeals or not.  Me? Not so much.
