Roundwound Strings Advice.

i have not used rounds for at least thirty years and find now i have a need for them. needless to say i have no idea what's going on in that market. i want cheap, medium ga. long scale strings. longevity is not an issue. any advice is welcomed and thanks in advance.

 Nickel EB Slinkys are cheap, easy on the hands and frets, and sound nice. They do have a VERY "to taste" upper-mid bite, but it ages away well before they die.  If you like stainless snarl, Rotosounds are the standard and Dean Markley SR-2000's have the same tone in a more refined sound. Rotos will eat your frets if you bend at all.

I was a DR Hi-Beam user for years but now like the Dunlop Superbright nickel strings.  They can be had for less than $15 from bassstringsonline.com.

I agree.  Just Strings has nickel D'addario XL 160 (.050-.105) for $21.72 a twin pak including a string winder  and Dunlop SuperBright nickel 45-105 for $14.22 a set.  The Dunlops have more high mids than the D'As IMO.

When I need to go econo, or can't find my preferred DR Sunbeams locally, I use EB Slinky / Super Slinky. In a REAL pinch, I've used some of the dirt cheap stuff like Guitar Research, etc.

I also like Slinkys.  I used to prefer them to D'Addario nickel rounds, back when I went for more of a bright modern sound (and after I decided I didn't want steel strings eating my gets anymore).  But then I realized they usually cost more and once the band is playing, I can't really hear any difference between them. Especially once they're not fresh out of the package.

It's been ages since I had a bad set from any brand. String quality and consistency has gone up. Gone are the days where you had to buy two sets of Rotosounds to get one consistent set.

I have a 5 year old set of RockMasters on my '64 TBird II.  They sound great.
