Weird nonstandard RD Artist

We're going to be playing a festival in the spring and I was looking at pic's of last year's when I saw this, a modified (looks like the bridge pup, at least, may have been changed out or just removed; can't quite tell for sure) in ebony but with a Maple board (SACRILEGE!) :

I would guess the dude changed it out but it is set not bolt on, so not that easy. Interesting. I don't dig this at all, but I wonder if anybody else would - are there people who would prefer a maple board on an otherwise all black super bright bass?

Maybe a Natural one that has been refinished black?

That would be the obvious thing wouldn't it. I'm a doi.

I suspect that didn't occur to me because of the finish wear (see the horn area in the last pic) but it could just be an old refin.

I think I saw one for sale on the net a while back like that and was drawn by the maple board and black. I think the ad said it was a refin.

Did Gibson offer the black RDs only with an ebony fretboard? I thought I read they offered the black Rippers that way so was wondering.
