4 or 5 strings?

Real men play 4-stringers, Uwe!

It's spelled "bass" - with a "B" as in B-string.

Just buy anything and don't bother us with this ghastly abomination ...

That sure is a fugly mofo, but a B-string would be at least one redeeming feature.

Real bass playing starts from the 10th fret on up, what is a B-string for exactly?

I voted 4-string. Only reason for buying that model in 5 string version is, if you want to avoid trying to answer the hard question why it is called a V bass when it only has 4 strings. Well, to us the answer is of course easy. It's a Gibson!

"Most of the time there just a huge gap between the (poorly amplified) low B and the rest of the band."

Amen, that is EXACTLY how I hear it too - unless the band plays the appropriate downtuned stuff to it. But it is unlikely that I will ever end up in Slipknot.  In the bands where I play the low D of a 5er is often enough already too low, anything lower still doesn't make any sense at all.

I voted ugly mofo, but if you have no need for the B, I'd change my vote to the top choice and say buy the 4 banger. And for the record, I don't think it's that ugly.

It seems that a lot of female vocalists have 5 strings in their band.

I have a hunch that I might have hit a pocket of resistance to 5-stringers judging from the current outcome!!!
