That big square plate for the jack input looks silly and unneccessary on the top side of the body.

It would keep the wood around the jack from cracking if yer cord gets yanked (e.g. the downfall of many a Triumph control plate).

That only happens if you don't secure the cord behind the strap (which I find rather stupid  :mrgreen: )

That's like a condom.  Not 100% effective, but definitely good practice.

He (Watt) has done jacks mounted like that before on other basses...

Ah I understand. So it's a reference to a cover-up of a damage that already happened. Not to prevent it.
Do you also get stickers along with the bass to cover up scratches and dents? ;)
