I was reading on Talkbass about these long scale 6 string bass / baritone guitars. I guess the Fender IV was one of these?

The Fender VI was (is) 30". It's a 6-string bass (tuned E-E) and not a baritone (bari's are typically 27"-28" scale and tuned B-B or A-A, somewhere between bass and guitar).

AFAIK the first 6-string bass was the Danelectro in 1959, next was the Gibson EB6 (1960) and then Hofner 500/10 and Fender VI (1961; the Fender VI was the first solid body 6-string bass). All were short scale (30"). Rickenbacker's 4005/6 (1967) was standard Ric long scale (33 1/2").

Here's my latest 4 string medium scale.

Marc, every time I see your Hamer doublecuts, I regret selling my 94 Hamer Special guitar. Love the doublecut Junior shape.

marcnorth

I love Hamers double cuts. I've got a 93 Special Humbucker thats great and just traded a 92 P90 Special for a 1976 Fender Rhodes 73 Suitcase Piano that has the 4X12 cabinet with the built in amp. The P90's made that guitar scream.
I want to order a black double cut bass to go with the white one pictured above.
Here's my latest short scale. My camera sucks as does my picture taking ability but this one sounds good through the old Music Man guitar amp.

My 94 Special was black with the Duncan P90s.

I would love to get a Hamer 8-string with passive pickups. Great pictures! Love the 8-string V too...

Ditto. That white one would be great with a pair of Gibson TB+ pups.

Video of my Triumph (it's a lecture on Buddhism, bass comes in part-way through):

And a couple of pics of the set-up:

The bass went through the Fulltone Bass Drive, then I split the signal, to the amp and also into my MBox/ProTools set up. I recorded my voice out of the PA on an old MD recorder, then overdubbed the nice clean signals of the bass and voice onto the video.

Any new short-scales in the house? Post 'em!

And to add something more, here's a clip of my band with our now departed Bassplayer using his Gretsch six string.
