My Beat '66 NR fell!
« on: February 28, 2015, 02:05:05 PM »
More like dropped  Onstage I do this thing where I lift my bass over my head and let it drop back against me, been doing this for years never had a failure. last night my wide leather strap tore out  at the hole for the strap lock and the bass just fell flat on it back to the floor :o . Momentarily stunned I picked it up and finished the song. The is a hairline crack in the headstock going through the E tuner. The bass is still playable and going back out tonight. I'll get some pictures tomorrow

Oh crap... :o

A bit more practice for your luthiering skills, I'm afraid; and syringes, and diluted glug... and maybe a little bit of additional kit checks are in order...?

Yikes! Glad is wasn't worse. But sometimes its worth the risk to bring the nice gear out, and it helps that emergency personnel is close by in the event of a fall.

Which begs the question, instead of robot tuners why doesn't Gibson invest in Medic-Alert devices for each bass  ;D

Ouch. That sucks Scott. Time to check/renew your leather straps...

Hope you can get the damage sorted with some thinned titebond.

A hairline crack is usually not too bad, just get it right the first time.  Probably thinned Titebond to give you wicking capability and working time, then padded clamps.

Use original Titebond. First, Squirt water inside the crack with a syringe. Then Titebond diluted with water. then if you can straight Titebond. I've used a syringe and an airhose to shoot the glue into a crack before. then clamp and wait 24 hours....oh and pray... prayer helps the most!!

My guitar guy uses water-thin cyanoacrylate adhesive "Hot Stuff". The capillary action distributes it through the wood. He says in a lot of cases the repair is actually stronger.
