'66 Thunderbird pickup needs to be rewound: advice?
« on: February 12, 2015, 06:55:26 PM »
I sent my '66-'69 NR II pickup to Steve at Thunderbucker Ranch. He asked how I wanted it wound, to his '66 specs or hotter.

Not sure which one I should go for. What's your experience with his choices? Favorites?

Well it's all personal preference. The stock 66 is pretty hot and if your happy with the way it sounded I'd  with that spec. I do like the hot 66 myself either will sound great.

If it is for a restoration I would go with the '66 spec.

Whatever you decide,  don't cut the lead wire when it's installed.  If you're not happy with the sound, Steve will exchange it in 30 days for a different spec.  I'd go for the stock neck '66.  Make sure it's installed to the proper height according to the instruction sheet.  That has a major effect on the sound.
Sorry, Denis.  I realized Steve is rewinding your pickup, not selling you one after I wrote this.  Anyway, I vote for stock.

Dang, my post from the other day didn't actually post!
In any event, I've opted for the stock '66N rewind so Steve's working on that. Thanks for all the input! I'm excited to get something else accomplished for this NR!
