As a side note  - as crazy old man Al took the stage in the middle of someones act to make an announcement, I made a pact with my youngest son:
Me: "Nick, if I ever get that friggin' looney tune, please kill me in my sleep."
Nick: "You got it, Dad" (who hugged me as he stared at the stage).

That kid's a keeper!

It's nice that you can look back and laugh about it now, but it really was a valuable experience. Benefit gigs usually bring out at least one prima donna and at least one unforeseen screw-up, you got to handle more than your share.

No kidding...we had plenty of time to learn the board and see how a 2-channel PA (I had been using a Peavey Mark VIII bass amp as a PA amp) with monitor Aux's work and can he mixed to our liking.  My oldest boy would stand along the back wall of the room and give me hand signals, so we could tweak the sound for the other acts.

This entire episode aligns with our motto in our house:  If you're going to screw-up (and you will), fail with integrity and learn from your mistakes, and somehow make it fun.  To translate, Don't be the biggest asshole in the cluster.

We did OK, have a great story to tell and learned a ton...and the meatballs were delicious.
Have Fun.  Be Nice.  Mean People Suck.

Damn Uwe, I was gonna type that till I got down to your post!  What a story.  See, the truth is stranger than fiction.  My first band a couple years ago only did benefits and each one was a mini-nightmare in waiting.  I had all of the same experiences over a couple years that you had in one night.  Geez, you deserve a medal for sure.  And are you seriously thinking of playing St. Bridges-to-nowhere again?  You are a saint!   ;D
