you play flats with a pick? weird.

The best way in my opinion. Love that sound for certain things. That's the sound of virtually every Beatles and Wings song.

I'm not much of a pick player at all, but when I do use a pick, it's on flats.  Don't like rounds in general (until they're 5+ years old) and to me the attack of a pick on flats is just about right.

That Flowerpot Men video takes me back to Nehru jackets.  I had one that was metallic green, verrrrrry cool.

Felix played flats with a pick on his Thunderbird.

This tune is flats with a pick

I'm pretty sure Joe Osborn played on it but Carol Kaye claims she did it?
Put that Guild through it's paces on a big rig yet?

Uwe, in the Bert Kaempfert video, 2:23-2:31, you can see two bass players, one playing fingerstyle, the other (Fender J) with a pick.

Yes, I know, earlier than that the bass parts were doubled on guitar with a pic. Later on there was a double bassist and an electric bassist (with a pick), but their parts weren't doubled anymore, the double bassist playing the more orchestral parts. The late Ladi Geisler was the bassist that came up with that sound initially in Kaempfert's big band, he was also Germany's first EB-1 player (later on sodomized with a P split coil!).

And in the vid I posted there is even two double bassists, plus one (what even looks like an acoustic) bass guitarist as spotted by Ilan and the guy with the J providing the click or - in German - Knack.

I think pick and flats is a lovely combination. A sharp attack with quick decay, it really brings the bass up in the mix without stepping on anyone's sonic toes. It's a bit like slapping for its percussive effect, but there is more tone to the note. Unrestrained slapping is too percussive and not enough tone for me.

I'll have to start making my own vids. Posted some others in the Bass Zone, hopefully they work.

This is partly due to the recording method, but there's no denying the middy tone of the bass. Throw in flats and a pick and things get even crisper. I could have backed off the tone on the bass a bit more or boosted the bass eq on the amp but I liked how the sound complimented the acoustic guitar tone the way I had it. Wonder if Uwe thinks it sounds honky.
