I do the same.  Never had a problem.  Pull off the old strings, hit the frets with some 0000 steel wool, clean off the dust, then rub in a bit of lemon oil.  I've had the same bottle for about 20 years now.

Why not grab any lube that happens to be handy at the moment? And if it's one that happens to be well suited for various types of intercourse, surely it must also do wonders for your other woods.
