I stopped looking up to famous cats long ago, some are cool, some not. I have had highs and lows, slogged through the trenches. I've earned my stripes. I don't need anyone's approval and nor do you.

Same here. I agree 100%. In fact..I influenced Zim Zum...the guitar player for Marilyn Manson..and also the guys in Disturbed and Alice in Chains.

I did play a candy apple red 1966 Jazz bass with a 1963 neck. NICE Neck. Definitely cool........Tone was different.....NOT a thunderbird....But NICE....then I held the 1961 slab board jazz bass....oh my gosh...the neck was so thin...even thinner than my '64 T bird....Oh man....but not worth $18,000.00!!!!!!!!!

When you hold a grudge the only one you're hurting is you.  The other guy doesn't give a shit...took me a long time to learn that...Peace. BTW...I still maintain you could find a trashy MIM Jazz that will do every thing a vintage one will...for a lot less...

I'll have to remember that.

True. I have a couple myself that do exactly that. I also have an SX '75-ish style Jazz that just kills. The recipe for Fender Fried Chicken has been out long enough for nearly anybody to make it taste just like the original.

Some do it a lot better than others. Everything is made to a price point.

Also true - and some people are more sensitive to the nuances of construction and sound than others. This much I can tell you, though... I've gone into GC or wherever far too many times and grabbed new Fenders (US included) off the rack that were literally unplayable - poor fit and finish, fret dressing that would slice up your hands and necks so bowed you could shoot an arrow from them. The $160 SX came directly out of its cardboard box and has gotten nothing more than a set of strings. Even the intonation was almost dead on. That doesn't mean that the SX is a better instrument or that Fenders are junk. It means, unfortunately, that the odds of getting a dud are far greater than we are led to believe - regardless of whose name is on the headstock. It also means that cheap instruments aren't as "cheap" as they used to be. Much of the time the difference in sound comes down to electronics and hardware, and those can be upgraded at a relatively minimal cost. For me, money is too tight these days to be an elitist when it comes to gear.

BTW, Fender has quietly added Chinese made instruments to the main line and are charging MIM prices for them. They're good instruments and definitely worth it, but you can literally get the same instrument for half the price if you don't mind having "Squier" on the headstock.
