Richie Scarlet knows how to look like rock star even with a headless bass.
Leslie has overcome addiction, cancer and diabetes in his lifetime. He looks a little wide eyed and coked up here too which doesn't help with singing for sure.
Dennis could have done a better job giving the mike to Leslie at the end.
Mississippi Queen into Nantucket Sleighride is some good jamming.

he's gone through a lot in his life - but has always had an unmistakable screaming tone with that guitar

I thought that was a damn fine performance, looks like mid 80's to me. Maybe trying to capitalize of the rise of commercial HM. I'd rather see Leslie with a LP Junior than that stoopid headless thing but hey he still sounds like Leslie.

I remember the night that show ran.  Mountain played two songs.  The first was "Never In My Life", and I kind of half noticed, thinking it was a good cover.  When they started "Mississippi Queen" , I looked again, and realized it was really them.  I didn't even recognize Leslie West.   I ran into him at NAMM during his fat, junkie years, and he was a real jerk.  I rented his band my Acoustic 360, which they proceeded to blow up somehow.

In those same years, I was playing, and was managed by Top Drawer Management out of Champaign, Illinois.  On their roster was this kid with a hummingbird tattoo on his forearm.  In 1976,  our managers said this kid was going to go places.  It was Richie Scarlett.

Fast forward to 2001(?), and all my high school friends decided to have a reunion and go see Mountain in Madison.  Leslie has become a lot friendlier.  He let us talk to him before the show, and showed us his WB&L pin that he still wears on his jacket.  I talked to Richie, and told him of our common connection.  At that time, he was still in contact with the old managers here and there.  At the show, Leslie introduced one song that he said he really hated at first.  Over time, he said it grew on him, and it had become his favorite over the years.  It was "Theme From An Imaginary Western".  He was playing the Steinberger guitar most of the night, but did bring out the Les Paul Jr that Gail Collins painted at the end.

If it weren't for Conan O'Brien, Dennis Miller would be the un-funniest guy in show business.

Yes.  I think his diabetes caught up with him.

think it was amputated to save his life.    saw him about 8 years ago or so.  His vice has been gone for long time.  Occassionally he would get that  old vibrato that could make one note sing for seemed like forever but most of the night he played a lot of Eddie Van Halen and 80's metal licks.  His sound was too much effect and less natural sounding than the old days.

Another rock god that time has not treated well.  20 years of heroin addiction cerrtainly takes it's toll.

just for the record i hate the term 'rock god'. it means nothing and gives people the impression rock musicians are something special. these folks get far more attention and money than way more gifted people playing in other genres. imo of course. :) your results will definitly differ.

Ouch! I'm not a Conan fan but at least he comes across as timidly hoping you'll think he's witty. Dennis Miller is not only wretchedly unfunny, he so full of himself that he can't wait to spew his "humor" on the audience.
