Just think, someone can tell the new pope this:

Why did Salvador Dali cross the road?
Clocks.

My first thought was Gunther Toody: Ooh, ooh, Francis!

Anyway, here's your official Pope Francis I rookie card (from Quartz;)

Definitely Gunther Toody for the win!

There's a hold up in the Bronx,
Brooklyn's broken out in fights.
There's a traffic jam in Harlem
That's backed up to Jackson Heights.
There's a scout troup short a child,
Kruschev's due at Idlewild
Car 54, Where Are You?

Seriously, I'm sure he's a nice man, but I have difficulty finding relevance in the appointment of a 76-year-old Pope who will be business as usual.

Cardinal, Können Sie mir eine Villa in den Hügeln rund um Buenos Aires? Ich habe ein paar Freunde bereits dort leben.

As a Catholic agnostic, I take a random interest. Unlike any spiritual concept, the Catholic Church is after all a living breathing reality, no sense denying its existence or even doubting it.

My first thought was: This guy comes from Argentina, a country with a - let's say - turbulent history as far as democracy goes. How can he not be tainted in one way or another given his longstanding and important position in the Catholic hierachy there? And sure enough, two of his Jesuit brethren were arrested by the Argentina Junta and subsequently kicked out of the Jesuit order by him, then released by the Junta and shipped off to Europe. Which sounds like a deal to save their lives to me because certainly there would have been little reason for the Junta to not shoot them (they weren't squeamish, you know) once they were ousted as priests UNLESS there was a prior arrangement. I'm willing to give him the benefit of doubt then.

2/3 of the Catholic world population live in Latin America where Catholicism still thrives. It is time for one of them to be Pope and I'm sure that his Italian ancestry and looks helped him with the Italian Cardinals' votes.

Not unless the Swiss Guard plans on outdueling your armed forces.

Meet the new Pope, same as the old Pope.

The US helped the UK in the last war. I doubt the US and Canadian governments would even consider siding with Argentina.

So far, he seems top be a Genuine Good Holy dude...stands up for God's ways...Doesn't act politically correct....but he does everything with Love....heck...the guy washed and kissed the feet of a number of AIDS patients... God Bless him...I was married in the Catholic church.....But I choose rather to believe in the Sovereignty of God as opposed the Free Will of man. I'm a 5 point Calvinist I guess...I Love John Piper and John G. Reisinger... Probably the 2 best Pastor's in the world right now.

Dave... not a new perspective over here for some time now... my "basic" search was "Obama Falklands" for these two... I know the US was in the background in '82 but that was then and this is now... the last link is an American commentators perspective from yesterday... no idea how well known or how accurate a view from the lower 48... only three people on the Island voted "turkey's for Christmas"...
