I attended the Moffat Bass Bash (a gathering of bass players in south Scotland for beer, curry and basses) last weekend.  A fantastic array of basses was on display.  Represented the brand with my Victory, RD and SG-Z (no room for the IV this time, sorry!).  This is what the feeling of playing a Victory Artist looks like:

Here was my little corner of the room:

Happy to report that during the big jam later on (house band of 2x guitar/vocals and drummer then we all swap in and out playing different songs), the Victory was praised for its thick but defined tone.  Full active, neck pickup, bass +2, treble -1 in case you were wondering ;)

Thanks to Peter Jamieson for taking the pics and capturing me in a happy place :)
Basses: Epi JC Sig 20th Anniversary - Epi Les Paul Standard - Epi Korina Explorer - G&L CLF L-1000 - G&L Tribute LB-100 - Sire D5 - Reverend Triad - Harley Benton HB-50

Sweet, sounds like fun. That's an intense color on the victory. What's going on with the sgz? Do they have lo-z pickups or something?
Contrary to what James Bond says, a good Gibson should be stirred, not shaken.

A bass that separates the fearsome Scotsman from the mere Briton!

Is that a gun grey/silver one that turned greenish as the clearcoat yellowed or did it always look liike that? Pretty rare for an Artist then (all silver ones I have seen were Standards)?

They were called "Z"-pups, looked like TB-Plus, but weren't, via the mini toggle you had a vast array of middish nuanced sounds, but nothing beefy unless you just dialed in the neck pup and really emphasized the bass frequencies on your amp. In fairness, maybe the pups are not alone to blame, the SG-Z sacrificed wood substance for its elegant, sleek look (it's a beautifully looking bass, Gibson's prettiest long scale SG bass). A thin neck and a thin body not a beefy sound do make.

My old EB3 has some beef ;D Even though the neck and bod are slight, it resonates like a tuning fork. The victory looks artichoke green on my screen.

Neepheid, that definitely looks like great fun.  It's always a pleasure to see people doing something so worthwhile like this.
It's not those who write the laws that have the greatest impact on society.  It's those who write the songs.

No, this is the Victory that I restored with some assistance.  It's supposed to be gold, but the camera flash does it no favours.  Flash makes it look a rather peculiar greeny-yellow.

Mine too.  I don't recall if the SGZ was maho or not.  At least the neck was maple IIRC.

Also, the mudbucker is an exception to all rules.

Nice Vic neepheid!

Also to address some points about the SG-Z, it is a very mid focused sound and it does need assistance from the amp if you want good bass, but keeping it in in series mode helps and the people who played it at the weekend enjoyed the sound of it and there certainly was no accusations of gutlessness or weediness.  And as pointed out already, plenty of admiring looks.

As far as I'm aware, it's all mahogany.  For all the low weight and small/thin body, it balances surprisingly well as long as you pick a sensible strap (ie. not slippy nylon).  Perhaps the mini tuners help a little?

Also, I've just realised that I have a history of being photographed with a gormless grin while playing Gibson basses :)

A happy man and his basses. Very touching and inspiring. I love both those basses but my shoulder does not.

Nice looking bass! I think the Victory Artists are some of the coolest looking basses Gibson made, and I really love the pickup/pickguard arrrangement on them..
