I'm not sayings its fake or anything, but those 3's and 7's dont look anything like serial on my 79 ripper.  The 3's are rounder (like an 8) and the 7's dont have the hanging edge at the start of the number...the 9's dont look the same either.  Did they use different stamps in the custom shop?

AFAIK there was no custom shop that long ago. It doesn't look like the font on several other '79 Gibsons that I could see well enough in gBase listings. I don't have an explanation, but we don't have a big enough sample to say it's the only one of its kind either. At any rate, they're up front about saying it's unusual.

It's an interesting piece for sure. How much is it supposed to cost?

Even the site readily admits it has a lot of wear, though.  That's a factor that would weigh heavily against it at that price, strictly IMO, of course.  I'd use the money for other treasures.

I mentioned earlier in this thread that I knew a collector who had one, so I emailed him for his opinion.

His reply: "Hello Dave... THAT IS MY BASS   Olivia's has about 300 of my pieces for sale."

6.000 bucks is steep for a hobbit with a runaway pickguard.

Regardless, knowing the owner, I have no doubt it's legitimate. He never would have bought it otherwise.

He's the man who broke the bank of Uwe Hornung...

Well bugger me... err, figuratively speaking, that is...

Uwe... I suppose you want those waypoints to my house now don't you... :o

I have sold him a bass and helped him in the purchase of a few others. He's very careful, he doesn't buy anything without verifying.

I'm not sure what you mean by that, but his collection is mostly guitars and not confined to Gibsons. He's been collecting a lot longer than Uwe. And he'll have plenty left even after the ones at Olivia's are sold.

It's tongue firmly planted in cheek and nothing more - just a reference to the noble art of collecting which I have suffered also within my own lifestyle... I have become more aware of collectors since being here than I ever was before... they have my respect, I can assure you...

I got it alright, Ken is taunting me to buy it!  And I might for 2.000, but not for 6.000.

A guitar from the same time frame popped up on eBay.......

http://www.ebay.com/itm/1976-Gibson-Les-Paul-Recording-Model-GIE0697-/330863350128?pt=Guitar&hash=item4d08fe1170

It's still different, but there are similarities.  ???
