This, to me, is almost perfect sounding bass
« on: January 20, 2013, 03:37:18 PM »
Nathan East - I absolutely love the bass as it hits my ears.
I've been listening to this for years and whenever Badge comes on, the bass me smile.

The bass does sound great, but I think it's too hot and forward in the mix.  Maybe that's why it sounds so good!

I don't much care for this arrangement of the song, though.  It's a little too fast for my taste.

Yep I'm with you.  It loses all the charm of the original which was such a unique song.

I also prefer the original.  However, I was just talking about this with someone several days ago.  He is a big Jack Bruce fan and probably sounds more like him than anyone I know.  But he said he felt Jack was losing his place in the modern context.  I suppose this is obvious (although very unfortunate, in my opinion.)

You can clearly hear that good ole Jack was already hearing a fretless in his head on that track!

I would think after playing the same song 350,000 times a change of pace would be nice for Eric!  I like it and the old version.  As for the bass, it's right where it should be!  IMHO.

adding Billy Preston, David Sancious and Nathan East to your touring lineup is certainly going to invoke a change of pace.
I always found the original version of Badge pretty boring.

His website said he switched to fretless in 1976.  I remember reading somewhere that he was playing a Dan Amstrong plexiglass fretless on the 1977 "How's Tricks" album.  I don't know how many brands he went through before he discovered Warwick.

A fretless plexi... now that appeals to me...

Mickey Thomas did this version. IIRC, Don Felder played lead guitar...

Yup - not a Airplane/Starship/Slick fan by any stretch, but that was nicely done.

I can't find much to criticize in the original cut.  Every time I hear it I know it will be stuck in my head for at least a day.
