One of the jazz giants of the previous century.  I liked his music a lot - it was melodious, accessible, and great listening.  R.I.P.

That is Rr-Ii-Pp - you know how he liked odd meters!  8)  He'll be driving them mad up there with those. A very sad loss.

I was lucky enough to see the DBQ at my college back in the fall of 1979.  His son played both bass (fretless Rickenbacker) and trombone during the concert.  R.I.P.

I was just informed of this by the office elevator.  I think that is odd.

I like this one:

9/8 can't be easy on a flying carpet!

I too was lucky enough to see him.  Definitely an American icon. I remember thinking his son's RIC fretless was the best, most appropriate for jazz fretless sound I had ever heard.

Sad news :(

Great clip of Chris Brubeck here...

The Ric probably sounds nice for Jazz because of the single coil pickups. Hope I can keep performing music as long into my life as Dave did.

Tis very Tower of Power'ish, is it not? Sort of Tower of Power unplugged.

He had humor. Anybody who titles one of his odd meter songs Unsquare Dance must have. Here's a version of that song by Jon Lord - it's been a bad year for keyboarders.  :-\

Thank God we've still got Rick Wakeman

I've served him (RW) a pint of London Pride prior to him going down to Brentford FC to watch a match - some years back now, mind you... used to play on an old pub piano for the old folks in the Hounslow area at Christmas time, doing requests...! (Roll Out The Barrel type stuff ;D)

Tricky ending on that version!  I love that number.  When I was in high school I played for a while with a pianist and we did this,Take Five and some other stuff for small groups.  I love the elegant simplicity of the bass line in Unsquare Dance, and the fact that it completely leads and anchors the entire number.
