At the height of the airfield bombing, the RAF was losing more planes on the ground than could be built. It was only a question of time. Then Churchill had the bright idea of sending a couple of Hampdens to Berlin which did very little damage but enraged Hitler thus to stop bombing the airfields and start bombing London. It was the turning point in the Battle of Britain. Soon RAF fighters were rising again, both in numbers and into the air.
We've taken too much for granted ... and all the time it had grown ...
