And FDR borrowed from Bismarck to enact Social Security here in the States. I'm blaming FDR for all our woes today. Brilliant political move - borrow money from the employed, with a promise to pay it back IF one lives past the life expectancy of the day. Add a baby boom 15 years later, and medical advancements, and the numbers don't work, but FDR wasn't around to deal with it. And, of course, nobody else did for another 40 years. Don't worry kids, when all of us baby boomers die, there are less of you behind us. Things will eventually work out. $:-\$

That was Göring - one was shot away - but he remained fertile with the other one. The treatment of the gunshot wound (during the failed putsch in the twenties) also turned him into a morphine addict. Morphine was at that time administered liberally because it was held to be non-addictive. He stayed a morphine addict all his life except for the last year in Nürnberg where the US guards cleaned him up. Hence he was comparatively lucid in the courtroom and had some flamboyant exchanges with the prosecution ("You said that the mobilisation of the German Armed Forces went on in secret?!
